4Y petrol hilux
hi guys, just bought my first hilux - 85 single cab style side 4x4
i know nothing about it so my first question is - how do the 4Y motors go? are they reliable? power/torque figures? what mods to get a bit more out of it?
its rollin on 33" BF Goodrich all-terrains how far out is the speedo? just so i got an idea of how fast im actually going?
driving home from brissy yesterday was great, heeeeeaps better ride than the Sierra i had i was able to hold 100 (what the speedo said) on most hills on the way home too which was great - sierra dropped back to 60 - 70kph
also what are the common problems with them? anything i should check or keep an eye on?
cheers

cant comment on the 4wds running the 4Y but i had a 2wd with 4Y,extractors,exhaust etc n a pod and it was a great motor, flew compared to my next minitruck which was 22r.Was reasonably ecenomical as a 2wd but i hear alot say the 4Bs are very thirsty.
Glad you like the new ride, bit more useable than the zuk hey

sierra truggy,37 sticky treps,propane,6.5s and disconnect,lux diffs with spools,16" fox shox,hydro steer.
they are not bad i have an 86 4wd tray... when i bought mine the head was blown so i got a brand new motor... its not bad for power but with the aircon on it dies a little... i run 31s and the speedo is about 3 or 4 km out ... i run LPG on mine cos i can and it doesn't backfire like it does on petrol the only thing thhat i dont like about it is the carbi so i reconmend that you try and find an efi kit for it ... best place for mod parts is http://locktup4x4.com.au/ cos its petrol the gears are a little higher then the diesel so low range could be lower... but other than that its a nice 4wd

The 4y is a great motor.I had one in a 85 4 runner i used to do jymkanas in and it had heaps of torque.I ran BF 33 muds and from memory was about 10% out on the speedo.(use a gps and check for your self)The mods i did were as follows
Down draft Webber carby off v6 capri with match ported mainfold and adaptor plate.
Match ported head
Full ballance
Full freshen up of engine
Dont touch the cam size
Loose all pollution crap
Extractors and nice exaust
The thing will want to wheel stand down low if you take your time and do it properly

I put a 4Y in my 84 4runner. Mine is on LPG. I put the electronic ignition from a tarago with extractors and a good exhaust on it. I think is flies compared to the old 3Y and the 1.3 zook I used to have. Very economical on the lpg and I can actually outpull my mates GQ with the petrol motor in it.

4ys are rubbish too
for the same price if not cheaper you could do a 4.0l v8 into your lux
im considering it atm
You bag 3.8 V6s then 4ys Then you tell us you want to use 4.0 V8 POS

thanks for the info peoples, so under further inspection under the bonnet - found it has extractors and a 2 & 1/4" straight through exhaust!!! no wonder it gets loud up top
im only getting about an inch if that of pedal travel for the throttle!!!! had a look under the dash and noticed that i can get about another inch or so more for the pedal as the cable lose'nd up after i twisted that adjusting knob on the dash below the ignition...
general crusing it use's about 11L/100km which is pretty good i think - friday i had to tow a 1100kg caravan from boonah to mundubbera - fuel usage jumped up to around 21L/100km!!! dont think i'll tow anything again
i plan to eventually put the hilux into some comps this year but before that, hit a few trails and get the feel of it im pretty happy with the 4Y at the moment im sure it could handle some tough tracks yeah? anyone use this motor for comps lol

i have a fairly worked little 4y in my luxy.im an engine reconditioner for work and done a few things to get some more power from the old girl.
-had the head shaved 12 thou to put compression up
-port and polish (makes a huge difference)
-shimmed valve springs for more seat pressure
-small cam regrind
-new rings
-extractors and sports exhaust
-350 holley carb (dont put these on)
-k&n airfilter
-electronic ignition
-few other little bits and pieces to push some more ponies out of her but there the major things i done.
with the 350 holley carb on this car it used to smoke twins 33's in 2nd gear.beats a vn 3.8 v6 by about a car length by 3rd gear.
dont bother putting the 350 holley on these motors though cause they dont idle for over 15-20 odd seconds, turns out the carb is WAY to big for the size of the motor and was putting to much fuel in the engine.the carb specialist said i should be runnning about a 180cfm carb n 350cfm is twice the size lol.
i took my original carb to a carby specialist and got him to rebuild the original carby and put bigger jets in it,cost about $440
cheers..smiley..
