There's a reason why they're ugly.. To try and stop people from buying them.

from a dollar perspective it'd be hard to go past a GQ. They're cheap, relatively reliable, parts are plentiful and cheap, mods are cheap.
Down side is they're not that well built upstairs and older ones or well used ones will have creaks, groans, rattles and wobbles..
For a well built tourer the 80 wins hands down. Better built, more reliable, more comfortable, but you pay for it.

You'll do well with either.

You're family will hate you when you try and pack everything and everybody into a hilux.
You're mechanic will love you if you buy anything rover.
You'll hate your self if you buy a suzi.

If that is the case then GQ wagon is the answer. The newest and cleanest one you can find within your budget.

but i was looking at a yard on the weekend .. and there was a couple of disco's on show .. and i actually liked it ! .. seem so spacious inside and i know they are capable offroad. just not sure on the fuel economy even on gas.

Ill do more research .. at this stage iam still looking for a clean GQ

On gas it will do better than a GQ.

TDis/TD5s get great economy. I know someone with a TDI disco who could average low 8s (l/100) on the highway (driving like an old person, but still...)

Some others I know with Tdi defenders averaged 10.5-12 L/100 doing the canning (fully loaded with fuel, water, etc...)

Can't believe i've read 2 pages and not one mention of the LADA niva !!!! can buy three for under 4 grand !!! unstoppable unreliable unrepairable and under achieving what more can you ask from a friendly Russian.
Mate do your self a favor and get one you'll never look back (as you will need all your skills to go forward)

I would highly recomend the Patrol/Maverick for comfort and plus you will get more "Bang for your buck" cruisers are fine but expensive.
Hilux and 4runners are not as comfortable and less power as either of the above choices.
just my 2c

95 v6 4runner i have a lot to do with is just as comfortable as my 93 6cyl 80 series. I think a better car on the beach and around town. Would be hard to choose between the two. obviously 80 series if your looking for more off-road and mods.

Mav to patrol makes no difference, only model level. My mate bought a pov pack Mav didn't evan have a tacho.

I am back in the market for a 4x4 after 2 1/2 yrs without one. Had to sell my XJ Jeep after my 1st son was born and now that hes old enough to take a hit offroad .. i want to get something practical with offroad capability.

Aside from the "non-Jap" thing, what was the problem with the XJ Capable, practical and bloody cheap

Patrols are the same too. My bus has drum brakes. PITA.

What ever you do make sure you the car you buy has near new brakes, tyres, suspension etc. Im due to replace all that on my car and its nearly gonna cost me the value of the car itself.

yeah cheap to buy but bloody expensive to run.

changing the welsh plug was a $1000 affair.

look around i found my mate an 80 series, diesel with aftermarket turbo setup, front bar, brush bars only had 250000kms and had a detroit in the rear and it was $5500 if you look arounf the PRIVATE sales you can find a bargin car yards will mark up!!

i have a few mates with 9inch coils in there patrols not to mention my hilux with 2.5bl,extended shackles and 35s we have never had a problem with mechanics,blue slips,pink slips and havent been defected with no engineers cert
