try search on here, and look patrol gu or gu 2.8

you will find heaps of threads on them...

Most say under powered others swear by them, if hes doing alot of towing i would consider the 4.2 the 2.8 has a weak box.

had one couldnt afford the 4.2
biggest mistake i made
better of buying a 4.2 gq or save the pennies and buy 4.2 gu
my 2.8 cracked the head,(very very common problem)and cost at the time more to fix than rebuilding a v8
certainly wasnt sad to see it go
IMO wouldnt have one if u give it to me
thats why they are cheap noone wants them

couldn't be happier with my gu 2.8 its got a three inch exhaust and k&n air filter. and it goes great has no worries keeping up with a few mates with 4.2td's even turning the 33's. but if you want it for towing or tyres bigger than 33's then id probably stay away from them as torque is an issue but hey for the money you pay for them i think there a great car and a very capable 4wd.

I had one for 5 1/2 years and it was relliable and I couldn't have been happier with it whilst I had it.

They do have a weaker gear box than the 4.2s but then again I have heard of and know of people with 4.2s that have had to replace the box after 250 - 300k also.

As has been mentioned if you are going to be towing with it, I wouldn't reccommend it.

The GUs were intercooled aswell so it will be beter than the GQ I had. Get a compression test done on it before your mate buys it and check the oil and service history of the vehicle and if it stacks up buy it.

my gu 2.8 was fully serviced from new and that still didnt stop the head from crakin
if he has to by it then good luck, there are good and bad in any model ,but the gu 2.8s really have a bad rap
id put more faith in a sd33 before an rd2.8 again
there are places that do FULL vechicle inspections (coupla 100 $$)and they will go right over the car, even tell you how thin the paint is,they are independant of car yards ect so they are not swayed one way
read up as much as you can on this and other forums and make decision
have been told the gearboxes are a tad weak
