70 series factory lockers

Post by bru21 »

Does anyone have any internal pics of the factoy diff locks on the new 70 series. Of any good info / links

I'm looking at a wagon and tossing up between ARB or Toyota.
It appears the waiting list on the car is the same either way as dealers don't have them in stock.

cheers bru

im pretty sure you need to buy a gxl to be able to opt for factroy locker and there elec so no air leaks

in the 02-06 78 and 79 series im sure you could only opt for fac lockers if it was a rv

They are electrically actuated, running on vacume pressure solinoides.

i have them in my GXL ute and they shit all over my old ailrockers in my previous vehicles.

Good points:
Never not work, no excessive time delay when you turn them on, no diff oil smell from compressor, well protected on housings, strong need i go on.....

There is no point buying the centres from Toyota, as the housings are different for the fctory lockers to standard.

You would be better off buying 80 series factory locked diffs and cutting off the bracketry and retro-fitting to yours.

I don't know the lockers inside out, but the only negative of the factory items I could come up with is that they use a different halfshaft. (longer spline in one side I.e. Need a replacment axle in the bush; may be hard to come by, as as in another recent thread by nat84, harder to source aftermarket axles for...

Funny you say that about the shafts...
Must be a Factory Locker saga!
One of my Previous 4x4s was a 95 Pajero, I picked up a Factory locker from the wreckers and tried to fit it but found the same problem, it fitted fine but the axles were different!
Funny thing is the guy at the wreckers comment that the axels were already taken!
With the Pajero option it had a small pump that was installed under the middle passenger seat plus an ECU that controlled the operation.
Sold the Diff center with Locker to some guy is SA on ebay, after I traded in the Pajero because I blew up the Auto!

unless its the short side i dont think the later factory diff locks had different splines to the normal ones..

could be wrong but when i had the cv out in my 80 the other day the shafts looked the same... guess ill have to put a tape over it next time

in the 80s one of the inner axles is longer for the lockers. The housings are also different, but can be modified.
I think the price of buying a new difflocked carrier and centre from Toyota would make ARBs look cheap as chips.
I can not fault the lockers in my 80. They have coarser dogs on the diff lock than ARBs, so one wheel needs to slip by about 1/6th of a turn before they engage sometimes.

Bru, how much are they as a factory option?
