I agree with that an Isuzu gearbox is the only way to go.
You guys have saved me from making a bad choice.
Thanks again.
In hindsight it is a no brainer.

plan is to tow a caravan to Canberra early August for a rally against a law change that more or less outlaws homebirth. How and where women birth is another choice that should not be taken from us. We don't all believe doctors are infallable gods. Besides, hospitals are for sick people .. and Suz was healthy when we had B at home!

That aside I'M GUNNA BE BUSY and any help is appreciated.

I played with the gearbox before it went in and made some notes.
No overdrive 5 speed.
Type BG5 A
Speedo 17
Gears 6
Prod No. 9Y18039

It's all moving forwards 30mm and maybe down a little.
But it's close.

After realising that the sump and oil pickup can't simply be altered, lots changed. I have now cut a rather large hole into the firewall and moved the engine back to allow the sump to clear the front diff. The front diff pumpkin is on the drivers side. Fortunately there's lots of room under the dash to allow the firewall to go back about 15-20cm and aside from an easy mod to the wipers I see no problem with this option. The engine mounts are finished but not the gearbox mounts.
Isuzu t-cases are worth big bucks, so a non Isuzu divorced case seems the best option. What model Landys did the LT230 t-case come out in? Is it a divorced t-case or is that something you do to them?
It seems the divorced Nissan t-cases are from the 720's and that makes me assume they would be a bit light weight. I'm told the MQ/GQ t-case are up too the job. Can they be divorced?
At this stage I'm open to any suggestions regarding the t-case.
The long break in the projects progress is because we've been road tripping and enjoying a few festivals.

MQ and GQ are diffrent boxes.

The MQ i think in the 2.8 petrol six station wagon came out with a divorced case. This is the same case as the 720 but i thought the 720 was passenger front output. WHere as the MQ was drivers.
If any of this info is incorrect im shore ill be corrected.

LT230 are not divorced but can be done easily. e.g.

You can pick one up for $300-500 if you look around. A disco version would be the best option as they are 1.222:1 high. Unless you can find a good 1.003:1 case.

I blinked and 6 months slipped through my fingers..... :D now get on with it jeepo.. and your radiator on the back wont do the job either, it needs airflow and living behind a brick won't provide that... even if said brick IS doing a hundred kph.

Cheers for that RED60, yeah its a bit long with no progress eh. The rear radiator idea has changed now that I can fit the radiator in the front where it belongs. Radiator volume could still be an issue. The rear radiator would have had an electric water pump and thermo fans and would have blown hot air around the 2nd fuel tank holding used chip oil. I stiil may fit a heater back there or even a small radiator.
Ok, I googled LT230, they're in Defender, Disco and Range Rover vehicles. I haven't found the year range though. The disco version LT 230SE @ 1.222:1 sounds like the go as gearing is still an issue and it is said to gain 15%. I've noticed its a full time 4wd with centre diff, I would have thought this would be undesirable due to extra wear and extra fuel consumption.
Am I safe to assume that most t-cases could easily be altered into a divorced case?
I'm still open to other suggestions.
Cheers

The series t-case is reasonably strong, people put them behind 5L V8s without issues. The LT230 is stronger again though.

The series case has 1.15:1 high and 2.5:1 low (can be converted to 2.89:1 low easily). There are also a few aftermarket conversions to 1:1 high and 2.4ish:1 low.

The LT230 came in the following flavours:
110 1985-1990 1.003:1 (isuzu) diesel 1.222:1(?) V8.
Defender 110/90 1992-on 1.410:1
Discovery 1.222:1 1989-2004 (note some models 2000-2002(?) had no centre diff lock)
Range Rover 1984(ish)-1989. 1.003:1 or 1.222:1
There was also a 1.6:1 case which didn't come to Australia AFAIK.

Full time 4x4 does not use any more fuel. However you can convert them to PT if you wish.

Have a look at the for sale here or the markets section on AULRO, there may be someone selling one. I picked a disco one up recently for $300.
