Drivetrain problem

Post by xtreem »

Hey guys I have a really bad shudder vibration, when accelerating and backing off. It shakes like hell mainly in first and second gear when trying to build momentum and then goes away once you are cruising it is also evident when backing off and engine breaking.
I have checked all uni's transfer mounts, gearbox mounts, engine mounts and found nothing wrong. The diff does have alot of backlash but it seems to be coming from around the transfer, gearbox area. There is also some play in the splines on the slip yok's on both the shafts.

Is this the symptoms of when the transfer case is worn out?

Any help appreciated.

Mine does that at the moment and it is an engine mount. I looked at mine and thought they were okay but when I did the chassis swap and removed the engine the mount fell apart.

how much movement have u got in the splines? if u have alot it will cause vibrations like u mentioned.back lash in the diff wont cause vibes unless ur pinion bearing is shagged. if u can move the pinion flange up and down u got probs... :finger:

Cant move pinion side to side just backlash. I will check the engine mounts again but they seem fine. let the clutch out with the brakes on and there isnt any mount lifting.

have exactly the same problem. thought I could leave it, but it stuffed an xfer and rear diff at the beach, not to mention alot of unis, lots of hard first and 2nd.
went to a mechanic and he was being a tool and told me a spring over would fix it, he was joking but still wouldn't even suggest what the prob was. he just wanted the money to fix it.

not sure if this is your prob but I know its mine, my clutch is stuffed and unballanced. I have a new clutch kit, its not in yet but dad assures me thats what it is, especially since I have replaced everything in the driveline except gearbox and motor. and the engine mount was his first suggestion.

check your jack shaft UJ,s !!!!
(the shaft between gearbox & transfer !!!!!)
when they seize/wear out , that can cause vibs !!!!

not saying ur wrong. but I replaced mine, the whole shaft with a newer one and no difference. yes the unis were a little worn, but all of them got flogged from the vibes.

Clutch or engine mounts.

Feeling confident that it'll be the Clutch.

I have changed the jack shaft uni's with no improvement. It wouldnt be the clutch, If it shuttered on release maybe but not in general driving conditions.

So its not a engine mount, gearbox mount, or uni.
I'm not buying the clutch theory.

So i'm looking more like a transfer case bearing or gearbox bearing. it makes a harsh metal on metal sound like a collapsed bearing but the shafts and flanges don't have play.

Your a legend overkill I just pulled the engine mount out "IN TWO PIECES" it looked fine in the car but the gearbox was pulling abit to the passenger side, removed the passanger side engine mount and that was it. pick one up tomorrow and hopefully back to smooth driving. well as smooth as a zook gets anyway. Thanks Guys.

Hey Germo, If you havn't taken your engine mounts out?? I reckon you should spend the ten minutes and drop the passenger side out and see if thats your problem before you do the clutch.

& 2 stop breaking mounts , run a small length of chain
from x-haust , or a/c mounting bolt hole
down to the chassis rail !!!

BUT NOT TOO TIGHT !!!!!
leave a lil' slack !!!!!

works a treat , & no more broken mounts !!!!! :D

ok this sounds like a good idea. I will take it out. I have broken one before so its very possible I have agian, last time I could physically move the motor though, but like you said you could tell until you had it out.

I need a knew clutch in anyway, but the engine mount is quick to check.
thanks
