1.5 times the original tyre width is exactly the same calculation here in the ACT under the NCOP that our rego dept uses, as it is in QLD under the QLD rego rules.
Someone pointing out that the technical information you have supplied is incorrect, is not being a troll.
I would rather be called a troll by someone upset and bitter at being called on their incorrect post(s), and therefore carrying on like a spoilt child about it, rather than let such blatently incorrect information go unchallanged.

Tyres
The maximum tyre width for a car or car derivative must
not be more than 1.3 times the vehicle manufacturer’s
widest optional tyre.
However, for an off-road passenger vehicle fitted with
front and rear beam axles, the maximum tyre width
must not be more than 1.5 times the vehicle
manufacturer’s widest optional tyre.
no mention of tyre placard
And I have yet to see a tyre placard that displays all the optional tyre/rim combinations for a model of vehicle.
Simon is correct, you will need to check what tyres are optional for your vehicle.
For all 60, 80, and 105 series, 33x12.5R15 are legel.
For a 100 series, since we are getting technical, I dont think the 100 series ever came with 7.50R16LT as the pov pack 100 series doesnt exist (its a 105).
what do you think they look at when you get pulled up and they do a proper check? I have seen the coppers check placards before and give defect notices for not having one.
As I stated numerous times in this thread while33s oare technically illegal on a cruiser they very rarley enforce it same s 31s hiluxes or are they legal as well?
It is a an ADR requirement after think 1980 or 79, to have a tyre placard.
The tyre placard does not show every optional tyre for that model of car, it shows 1 tyre and wheel combination.
Why would they write the guidline, saying, the largest optional tyre, if they meant "the tyre fitted when built".
The optional tyre on that vehicle variation e.g. GXL, VX, etc. Which is stated on the tyre placard
The placard can have a variety of sizes on them and the manufacturer will put the optional tyre sizes they reccommend for that vehicle. Example of this my other car has 3 different tyre sizes on the placard not just one like you stated placards have

The NCOP mentions this...
4.1 REPLACEMENT TYRES ON STANDARD (OR MANUFACTURER’S OPTIONAL) RIMS
Some tyre sizes have become obsolete and are no longer available. Equivalent replacement tyres with different size designations may be fitted without specific approval under this Section. Every passenger car manufactured after 1972 (ADR 24) is fitted with a tyre placard that contains information on original and optional tyres and rims for that vehicle model.
...funny how a national standard mentions that there can be more than 1 tyre/wheel combination on the placard, but Shadow knows better because he has the Tyre & Rim Standards Manual.
This is straight from the NJOY book that most tyre shops use. The 7.50 16 used on an 80 series is 812mm, the 275/70/16 is 792mm diameter and the only other tyre used on an 80 standard is 265/75/15 at 779mm diameter. The same book lists a 33 (any width as they are all technically the same hieght) at 832mm diameter.
Now unless I failed grade 1 math that's an increase of 20mm on the biggest tyre fitted to an 80, 5mm bigger than allowed
for a 60 series and earlier it is listing the 7.50R16 that was fitted standard measured at 827mm diameter so you should be able to get away with it height wise. The problem lays when you go to fit the rims and tyres as it may end up over tracked and they could get you on that. Reason there is standard they have a 6inch wide rim with 0 offset when going to 33s most people put on 15x8s with -25 offset meaning an extra inch each side of the rim and and extra inch outwards with the offset making the 4 inches wider than standard (6 or more if going 15x10) but you are only allowed 50mm wider track. The exception to that i sthe 60 series sahara as it came out on 10R15s so 33s are legally a no go
100 series is the same as a 80 series the biggest was a 7.50R16 with a measurement of 812mm so 33s are illegal on them too
And the 7* series is the same as the 80 and the 100
The Above is why it is a big grey touchy area concerning Cruiser (and Patrols) and is why the authorities generally let cruiser and patrol owners get away with 33s, unfortunately sometimes the do have a shit of a day and will give some poor unlucky guy a defect for them just becuase they can

Sorry Matt, think you must have failed grade 1 maths.

832 minus 812 equals 20mm, not 30mm.
Sorry.
oops should learn to check things before hitting submit, but still over the 15mm anyway. Fixed it now
you can buy a tire placard and put it on your car, problem solved.
if you fit 'OTHER" factory wheels to a new car you have to fit a new placard to suit. so go buy the right one and fit it to your car now you have a toyota sticker saying you can use 33's.

Apart from the fact you can't actually do that legally anyway, and yes they can check, there is no cruiser newer than a 60 that has a "standard" tyre big enough to allow 33s legally.
Also removing the tyre placard or replacing it with a non standard one IS a defectable offence. 3 of my mates have been booked for no placard and were told to replace with the proper placard not one from a later model
Also you don't fit the the placard the dealership does before delivery making it legal. Same as It is illegal to have HID headlights UNLESS fitted from factory
Another thing the police and DOT have a book with all the factory tyre sizes available for that model and variation so they will know if it is sporting the right placard or not or know what tyre size is supposed to be on it if there is no placard

Track is measured between the centrelines of the rims, not the outside edge.
So you could go out 100 mm wider overall than standard, 50mm each side, if keeping the same backspacing, for an overall track increase of 50mm.

Okay wasn't sure how they did the measuring just assumed outside to outside, so if you use the -25 15x8s (as most do) it would be damn close to that 50mm
When they measure the track of a vehicle they measure from the inside of one side to the outside of the opposite side and then check there measurements to the vehicle standards and compare. Every RTA and Police officer is taught this way.
and seen that we have never recorded that a customer has put a differnt factory option wheels on there car i dont see how they can check. yes they can check it was an option on that model range.
the end of the day if it doesnt look like it should be there they will pick it.
i registered an 80 with 33x11.5 and nothing was said.
i had a qld transport pit inspection tday for the hilux. got away with 31s on my hilux. have to get standard wheel track measurements for him to compare but hight didnt matter.
my 2c.
88 hilux - 3rz+ locked
04 prado - that has a second home called toyota service dept
94 comp truck hilux - in the making....

Just becuase it was registered with out a problem means squat, the RWC doesn't check tyre sizes just the tread depth and at QT the don't check that for a new rego
As for the tyre options the only FACTORY options on an 80 are 265/75/15, 275/70/16 and 7.50R16 none of which allow a 33 to be legal
100 series were 7.50R16, 275/7016, 235/85/16 and 275/65/17 also none of which allow a 33
so your arguement of factory tyre options and changing a placard (which is Illegal as it to do with ADRs) is pointless

As I have said several times in this thread that while 31s on a lux is illegal they let it slide mainly due to the sheer number of hiluxes running 31s same as 33s on a cruiser it is illegal but damn unlucky if you get done for it
