What was your fuel useage on Simpson desert crossing ?TD42

Hey , was after some rough fuel figures used to cross the simpson desert ? I worked out it is about 580ish Ks . My GQ is a TD42 with turbo LWB , Family on board 4 ppl , roof rack , 148 lt Tank - thoughts on carrying extra fuel ? my fuel figures vary depending on use 10 lt /100k to 16lt per 100ks . Want some of your fuel figures of similar setup vehicle ,thanks .. Christo

There area number of varying factors that can influence different results.

East to west or west to east crossing?
vehicle gross weight
tyre pressures,
right foot etc.

4.2 TD's GENERALLY use 16-20lt /100, depending on the above factors,

Average fuel usage of a 'normal' crossing is around 96lt for a 6cyl TD.

But many years ago I got bad fuel out of Birdsville and was using 30+lt per 100kms'

Simple guide I use is work requirements out on 20lt per 100 then at 20%

Also carry 20lt of fuel separate or main /auxiliary tank (just in case0

I crossed the simpson last august and from Oodnadatta to birdsville I averaged 18L/100km.

The last 11km or so I had to tow my father in law coz he ran out of petrol in his ford courier, and I had a couple goes to get up the hard track up big red (read foot flat and on the redline all the way up....boo yah) Also i wasn't really holding back up most of the other dunes.

Sweet thanks guys, we are planning on going from east to west. Been to robe a few times with the boys but the hammer is down the whole time so i dont even bother to look at the numbers on the bowser! will be turning down the wick a little to touring mode on the injection pump and hopefully fit my intercooler b4 the trip too - was guessing about 18lt /100km as it stands at the moment . Best thing about doing a trip is it gets all the outstanding jobs on the truck attended too !! Thanks for the replys.

Depends on the route mainly, but if you work your consumption on 18-20lt per 100km, [std TD42] and add 25% for your requirement, for getting lost, detours, difficult sand [depends on year, and time of year]

There are many thingsd apart from the crossing itself worth a look while in the area, rather than just cross the desert, and whilst in the desert, some things worth travelling to, so the more fuel the better really, to do these things.
