If you had $8,000 what would you get...?
So I'm in the market for a new truck.
I've got a budget of $8,000.
Write what you'd get and why.
Me - I'm thinking a cheap TJ Wrangler.. Easy to get parts for, simple structure, easy to lift etc.

Really depends on what you want to do with it. My choice would be a Series 1 Discovery for around $4000, then you have cash left over for mods and repairs. Nearly all Discovery 1s that are still on the road will be OK, time has weeded the lemons out. Parts availability is excellent, and seems to be getting better, and modified items are easily available, even if you have to import them from the UK or the USA/Canada.
I like Salt
Is $8k for the car alone, or total budget of $8k?
Remember there's stamp duty, insurance, rego and all the things that need fixing right away.
If total budget is $8k I'd spend $4k on a Sierra and what's left after the boring costs on tyres, lockers and the fun stuff (of course this isn't a good choice if you have more than 1 friend and like going for more than 1 day).

60 series or 80 series. Build quality is second to none, parts are everywhere, reliability is also one of the best and fairlu easily modified with heaps of kits out there.
As others said, if your budget is 8k with the car on the road then look for something in the 5-6k range as rwc and rego on its own is $1,000 - $1,500.
Go Toyota!

Chris - get stuffed!
Ben - No thanks
Bogged - you being productive as always?
Anyway, thanks for the replies. The reason I didn't put any specs in is i wanted a unbiased view before I said what I'd like.
I won't get a GQ as they're too bogan for my liking. Too many 18 year old's with 8" lift and southern cross stickers plastered across them ruined it for me.
My criteria:
No need for a ute
must be easy to mod & get parts for
no older than ~15 years

Cable bracing is the way of the future!

gq will be cheaper than an 80 and if you dont put an 8" lift and UNIT stickers all over it then it wont look anything like all the POS gettin around.
Soccer, Cricket and Footy all require 1 ball to play. My sport requires 2!!!!

how about a 75 series ute??? can have mine for under 8 lol.....
seriously though, they are quite capeable, mine has gone almost everywhere i have pointed it, with open diffs, and as easy on the louad pedal as i can be, no breakages(not 4wding ones any way), only had the water pump go and the oil relife valve, both are relatively easy fixed,
on 33s and with no lift, i was very supprised at how it went, made me change my whole approch to they way i modify it. look into one i reckon, i bought mine for 4,200, plus the 1500 for first rego and roadworthy.
