FM Radio interference from Fan

Post by mlowe76 »

HI All,

Recently my fan has started to interfere with the FM radio in my FJ73.

It Is definitely the fan, as with the fan off the radios crystal clear.

When its on I can hear a static type noise on the radio.

Could someone give me a tip as to where to start looking?

Regards
Matthew

Does it do it on all fan speeds? Is there any difference between speeds?

First guess is arcing in the brushes (presuming the fan motor is a brush type...) New brushes might help, but the problem could also be a dodgy commutator ("slip rings", if you like).

A 25V capacitor across the fan terminals may help suppress the arcing, or you could ask a friendly auto-electrician if they're likely to be able to improve things by cleaning the commutator & fitting new brushes.

You may have success with a replacement from a wrecker, but it could also be as bad as yours.

Or it could be a different problem altogether.

Scott,

The fan speed has no effect on the sound, other than when its off, the sound is gone.
