Hi,

I have a 87 troopie 2h ARB turbo with 33's and a 2inch lift.

I spent about 15mins writing this post and the internet crashed and I lost it all so I'll make this breif.

The problem is that when I go uphill so does the temp. I have replaced all of the hoses, checked the water pump, got the radiator flushed and cleaned, got the cooling system pressure tested and after reading a few posts thought it might be the fan clutch - so I have replaced that too.....

she sits on about 1/4 on the temp guage then jumps straight to 3/4 or higher as soon as you hit a hill, when you come down the other side she gets cool again, I have no idea what to do next but I've done everything I can think of but she still gets hot. If anyone can help I'd love to hear from you!!

maybe check the thermostat but I wouldn't be too concerned my first 2h Turbo had a very hard life and lived most of it's life above 3/4's and it finally died of something unrelated. My current 2h turbo goes up to 3/4's on hills, soft sand etc but It doesn't run a thermostat at all.

Try using a lower gear and less accelerator your probably just putting too much fuel in

sounds like you need more boost or turn your fuel back a bit ,had the same problem and i run 10psi boost so just turned the fuel back bit and lost no power just runs a bit cooler now. do you have a pyro mine hits 520 .c on full load up hills

Id be 100% sure it is fuelled up too much, is it choofing black smoke up hills when its getting hot?

Check your EGT's against a similar engine, TURBO60 has 520, go from there buddy

the only thing i can think of from when i had my 2H turbo is that your not shifting it back a gear so it dumping the fuel into it and not burning it off

i dont know how to say it but if your in 5th go back to 4th and keep the revs up but not as to kill the motor

Thanks fellas,

I should probably clarify - I am going around Australia in her at the moment so she's loaded up a fair bit, so when i hit hills I often have to drop her down to 3rd (2nd if it's real steep) just cause it's fairly gutless and I can keep her on about 2000RPM and take it slow and steady rather than revving the crap ot of her.

I've done the thermostat so i know it's not that, I'll try the fuel and see how I go. I'm currently stuck in Nowra NSW and have 7days to get to Melbourne to get the boat to tassie and the coast road is flooded so the only way is up hill over the range so I need to try everything I can...

I'm not sure how much boost it has or how to check? Also i have a slighht exhaust leak on the manifold so maybe this has something to do with it?
yeah it does blow a bit of black smoke...

If i were you, id be biting the bullet and taking it in to a diesel service centre.
They have all the tools/knowhow to get you on the road again, plus they will warrant any work performed so if it breaks down on your way to Mexico they will pay for NRMA or someone to come fix.
Nothing worse than knowing something is wrong, pushing it harder and then breaking down on side of road.
If your stuck in Nowra, head down to the Bridge Tavern, good cheap feed.

How exactly did you check your water pump?

Is there good flow through the radiator (temperature drop from top to bottom).

What is the conidition of you coolant? When was it changed last?

Not something silly like air in the system?

When it 'overheats' and goes to 3/4 on the guage turn the heater on and see if that cools it down quickly.

Have you changed the temp sensor?

Answer all these questions then check the fuel.

Uncanny stuff this, my 2H turbo troopie does the exact same thing, travelled around oz over 18months and as we went gradually replaced everything, even had a post on here and did everything every1 said, even replaced an already new radiator with a much larger one!! Alot of money later and it has never been fixed, i think some1 posted something to the effect of 'live with it', and i'm afraid thats that. I had mine dyno'd and tuned by a reputable diesel service and they said EGT's were under 500 in any test. The only thing i didn't try was to lock the fan hub, which in my opinion could overcome the problem, tho you will lose VALUABLE power and becomes very noisy at speed.
