oil light doesnt come on under self test (ie ever) TD42

Post by rumpig89 »

i have recently noticed that my oil light never comes on under self test when starting car.. that is it never works.

I have checked the bulb and it is all good, placed a test lead between neg side of bulb on circuit board and car frame and bulb glows dimly.. therefore ok.

where to look next?? should i be investigating a sensor, plug etc??

Dont have a wiring diagram at the moment - if someone could post a pic of that section of their manual??

its a TD42 turbo for what its worth. 88 Maverick

cheers

its most likley the pressure sender next to the oil filters , i would measure resistance here ,if you have an oil pressure guage in the dash cluster then it will have 2 wires comming out , yellow for the pressure guage and black for the light

measure resistance from each wire to ground (negative)??

ill check it at the plug. When the car isnt running i would expect a low resistance from the black to neg?...ie it earths causing the light to glow?

do u know what range (ohms) the cluster should operate over (full scale)??

i have noticed that the oil pressure 'appeared' slack... kind of assumed that it was the sender but thought it should make the light come on not stay off. ill get some reading when it stops raining.

cheers

the black wire should be a dead short to earth when the motor is off ( oil light )

the yellow wire should have no resistance with the motor off and have increasing resistance up to a dead short to earth at about 90- 100 psi

these commonly fail and aftermarket ones dont seem to last or work at all , genuine ones from nissan are around 130 ish bucks from nissan and should last another 15 odd years

should that be increasing resistance up to 'open circuit' to earth?? or does it should it acually start at 0, increase with pressure increase, until a point at 90-100 when it drops straight to zero?

cheers for the info. looks like ill prob be gettin a new one[/b]
