15x10 rims and the stupid nsw law
15x10 rims and the stupid nsw law
I went to order tires today and was looking at 35" by 13.5" tires, for tires this wide i need 10" wide rims. all the engineers wont engineer 10" wide rims because the law states the max width is 8"
i dont want to be swapping tires and rims every time for rego but i really want 13.5" wide tires..
has any one found a loop hole in the nsw law or gotten some sort of special exception?
please help

Re: 15x10 rims and the stupid nsw law
fuck the laws mate, you obide by them you'l do nothing in life the way its going, you need a permit camp , to shit to fart, run what you want, you might have to find a normal set of tyres for rego, 13.5 is gettin pretty wide hey why not just stick to 12.5, dont look as bad with just as much traction really. I sold my big patrol because of all these new laws coming in and i've regretted selling it every fuckin day since, fuck the cops and there stupid ridicoulous laws, why is a 10inch rim more dangerous than a 8, i cant work it out, if someone can let me knowyoung pup wrote:I went to order tires today and was looking at 35" by 13.5" tires, for tires this wide i need 10" wide rims. all the engineers wont engineer 10" wide rims because the law states the max width is 8"

im no expert but there is a big weight difference between 8 and 10 inch rims which would affect braking capacity for starters , wheel bearings would be an issue due to increase in overall mass as well !
4 in king springs, pro comp long travels, gu diffs, 4.6s ,front lokka,35" mtzs, custom made everything ,custom dual cab and a growing list of spare parts
oh jesus christ mate, what extra weight would it be, no more than 5 - 6 kg, if your going to stress that much i would suggest only fueling up half way you could save 40 - 50 kg of load on your poor rims and wheel bearings, you must be kidding me. what a crock of s**t, and it doesnt take an expert to work that out. do you work for transport i take it???????????dazgq1 wrote:im no expert but there is a big weight difference between 8 and 10 inch rims which would affect braking capacity for starters , wheel bearings would be an issue due to increase in overall mass as well !
if you dont change your track i realy cant see how it would affect your wheel bearings its when you start goin big offset that it will affect your wheel bearings. and braking the overal wheel weight has a lot less to do with it then the actual rolling dia. But yea id just go for 12.5s think yourself lucky in qld the biggest we can go on a gq is 32x10.5
Blown ls1 GQ winch truck. and GU tow car / daily
its not the extra few kilos (although the increase in unsprung weight and handling dynamics needs to be considered) its to do with the amount of torque applied to the bearings, not torque in the direction bearings are designed to run, but torque twisting them so to speak.RIZZO wrote:oh jesus christ mate, what extra weight would it be, no more than 5 - 6 kg, if your going to stress that much i would suggest only fueling up half way you could save 40 - 50 kg of load on your poor rims and wheel bearings, you must be kidding me. what a crock of s**t, and it doesnt take an expert to work that out. do you work for transport i take it???????????dazgq1 wrote:im no expert but there is a big weight difference between 8 and 10 inch rims which would affect braking capacity for starters , wheel bearings would be an issue due to increase in overall mass as well !
torque = force x distance perpendicular to the force.
the torque is created by force (weight on the tyre - basically a constant within a vehicle) x the distance from the point of rotation (bearings) and the average point of the force. this distance increases as the wheels go wider.
on a 7 inch rim with - 22mm offset, the distance will be say 22 + 30mm? give or take so 52mm.
on a 10 inch rim which would need to be - 100 or so to allow clearance on the inner edge of the tyre. the distance would be 100 + 30. so 130mm.
the resulting torque would be approximnately 130 / 52 = about 2.5 times as much torque.
so yes its a big difference to double the amount of load on a bearing.
these figures used are approximate, but it gives you an idea of why it matters.
itsa the same reason people who run wheel spacers often say they need to watch their bearings more. and why they are not legal either.
no i dont work for dot. but i do like physics

Re: 15x10 rims and the stupid nsw law
Which actual brand/model tyres are you looking at? Some 13's can be run on 8's.
If all the engineers have said "no we wont engineer it" what do you think you will find here to change their mind? Why should you be considered for any special exception?
If these are only weekend tyres, just use them on weekends, then put your weekday tyres back on.. 2 sets of tyres and rims.

well you must be right then and everyone else wrong, i must say nearly every person i know that has a 4b up here is runnin 10inch wide rims, never seem to have any problems with wheel bearings than the average jo blo,i been runnin for years on 36" tyres, your special matedazgq1 wrote:no mate i dont work for rta but i do build pulleys for the mines so i have some idea about bearings and loads they take , pull ya head in it aint a cattle truckRIZZO wrote:oh jesus christ mate, what extra weight would it be, no more than 5 - 6 kg, if your going to stress that much i would suggest only fueling up half way you could save 40 - 50 kg of load on your poor rims and wheel bearings, you must be kidding me. what a crock of s**t, and it doesnt take an expert to work that out. do you work for transport i take it???????????dazgq1 wrote:im no expert but there is a big weight difference between 8 and 10 inch rims which would affect braking capacity for starters , wheel bearings would be an issue due to increase in overall mass as well !
totally agree mate, someone finally said somethin that makes sense on herebig lux wrote:if you dont change your track i realy cant see how it would affect your wheel bearings its when you start goin big offset that it will affect your wheel bearings. and braking the overal wheel weight has a lot less to do with it then the actual rolling dia. the reason why i would like 13.5" wide tires. is because i want the toyo open country mt. these tires only come in 33x12.5 or 35x13... and im getting 35's.
i found out today these tires can be run on a minimum of 8.5" wide rim.. do king rims make them in this size?

anything wider than 8inch is no go legally.young pup wrote:the reason why i would like 13.5" wide tires. is because i want the toyo open country mt. these tires only come in 33x12.5 or 35x13... and im getting 35's.

8inch with beadlocks are 9inch.... but again illegal.
PM Lockee - he runs these in 35
what price you get quoted?
its pretty hard to increase tyre width without increaseing track. not many vehicles can take a 3 inch increase per side without increasing track and not rub terribly on the inside.RIZZO wrote:totally agree mate, someone finally said somethin that makes sense on herebig lux wrote:if you dont change your track i realy cant see how it would affect your wheel bearings its when you start goin big offset that it will affect your wheel bearings. and braking the overal wheel weight has a lot less to do with it then the actual rolling dia. 'usually' wider rims will mean more offset
anyway it was explained why they dont allow people to randomly increase load to such levels.

but they cant mate, it will be to much load on the wheel bearings and will affect the braking of the vehicle due to all that extra weight, even a bloke from the mines that makes pulleys even told me 10inch rims are to much if you read previous posts, you have the same setup i have, have you ever had any problems with bearings, i havnt but we know nothin hey, totally agree with yamichael a wrote:I have 6 in lift 35 on 15/10 in rims on gu diffs under my Gq.
Cops never look at it rego is all sweet every time what the problem put them on and drive it if you start getting problems with the cops then change them.
let me just say again im no expert i was only offering a suggestion as to why the authoraties would deem 10 inch wide rims to be illegal its seems that even after it was explained with some technical detail that some still dont understand and just for the record my comp tyres are 35x13.5 on 15x10inch rims and i dont have any bearing issues after buying heavy duty japanese ones

Have got quote for the Toyo's yet? How much for the 35s? The last time I got a price they were very expensive compare to KM2, MTZs, STTs!! Add an extra $150 per tyre.young pup wrote:the reason why i would like 13.5" wide tires. is because i want the toyo open country mt. these tires only come in 33x12.5 or 35x13... and im getting 35's.

Allied is the only company that make 8.5 wide rims.

Nitto Mud Grapplers, Lockrite, 4.3s, Trail Ready BL, PTO, High pinion rear,Gu diff with Buds Customs armour and heaps of Superior gear, 24% Reduction .
Scrub radius increase is a big concern as well as the extra leverage on bearings.dazgq1 wrote:let me just say again im no expert i was only offering a suggestion as to why the authoraties would deem 10 inch wide rims to be illegal its seems that even after it was explained with some technical detail that some still dont understand and just for the record my comp tyres are 35x13.5 on 15x10inch rims and i dont have any bearing issues after buying heavy duty japanese ones
best I got on 285's was $410, some were 450! compare that with 280 for Kumho, or 365 (off the street price)for BFG MT or less for Maxxis ...SIM79 wrote:Have got quote for the Toyo's yet? ye they are expensive but they are a really good tire. its apparently needs very little balancing and they are wear well. comp trucks in the states are using these tires heaps and loving them
