Toyota RAV4 FULL makeover
Moderators: toaddog, Elmo, DUDELUX
what is the wheelbase of the bundera the patrol and the rav4?
has anyone even bothered to check how far they out from each other?
i dont think that they would be very much difference in the length and you might be able to get away with custom length links and drive shaft to change the wheelbase to suit the rav4 body

are you competing to win or save fuel
dont need to be this extreme to be beter than a v6
I would think the RAV is closer in size to a bundy in lenght and width ill park next to one when i see one.
Id rather not have some sort of confussed inbreed abomination like a maveric ,Makes me vomit in my mouth thinking about it, keep it real keep it toka tough keep it toyota power

If someone could size up a Bundera Chassis if you
own one that would be appreciated as i cant seem
to find one floating at the wreckers!
But so far its going to be GQ!
And my brother has a V6 in his Lux and it seems to
go hard. So if he can flog it and it doesn't stop then
it should defiantly go ok in the RAV. And also you can
always pick up another motor pretty much anywhere
if it blows up.
Either way its going to be different no matter what
chassis i put under it or motor i put in it.

foxyrav, i just read this whole thread and youve turned me from thinking theres no way shes gonna do it, to thinking yeah we might see the tuffest rav4 in australia within the year!
To give my opinion on engine choice, flyology suggested a Lexus V8, it would suit the bill perfectly being injected, 32 valve, 4L, rev to 7-9k, standard forged internals, 200kW and made of full alloy!
But since your using a gq chassis, you could fit the rb series motor (skylines and vl's), i got no figures at hand but they are a real punchy motor that with a few mods will get from zero to trouble very quick. And a fair few gq's had them standard.
Good luck and look forward to reading a project thread.

gen 3-4 3sgte making 252hp 330or so nm of torque, more power than a 1uz and a sr20 and its toyota. They are not anywhere near as big as a 1uz, and its been done before into rav's although not with upgraded diffs etc
IF you can afford it put a beams 3sge in it and came standard in rav4s/altezzas/st202's in japan producing 177-197hp at 7000rpm not bad for a n/a 4 cylinder, your making more power than a sr20 minus the turbo, more than the 1uz with 2 times the cc's and half the moving parts.
an rb is obviously a straight 6 and is a really big ask to shoe horn that into a very small engine bay.

i think you will find the gu chassis too long in the nose it will need to be cut back to use it and once this is done you will not get a straight 6 and a radiator in the front of the carANGRY6 wrote:foxyrav, i just read this whole thread and youve turned me from thinking theres no way shes gonna do it, to thinking yeah we might see the tuffest rav4 in australia within the year!

u will need a v6 small v8 or 4
u really need to work out what your plan is engine wise
if u get a v8 it will feel like a bigger car to drive due to the extra weight and will not be able to be thrown around as much as say a hi powered 4 cyl
if u say got a td bundy chassis it already has a r series box all u need is a dellow bell housing to fit a lexus v8
drop the rav body on and u r done also the width of the bundy axles will be close enough to not have to mod them
it really is time too get the tape out
with regard to spares for the bundy
all hiluxes have bundy running gear remember
80 series 1980 hilux cab supra twin turbo engine
1hdfte 80 series
LHD fz 80 series GX
1hdfte 80 series
LHD fz 80 series GX
There was a complete bundera at NQ 4X4 and crash up here in Cairns, shouldn't be too expensive to get it back loaded from Cairns to Brisbane. If you want I will have a look on the way home tomorrow from work, can get a price also.....

only problem was people used to think it was a trail bike or a chainsaw while i was flogging it
there is a factory bell housing to put this into g series box which held out fine

Daniel: i originally thought the RB motor myself!
Because my X had a VL with Rb turbo engine and i absolutely loved it.
And i know they are a strong engine, I flogged it a few times
and it never missed a beat hahaha.
Do you reckon it would be good under pressure but?
When i am 4wdriving?
His was also 5 speed manual, Im not sure if i want to manual
or be lazy (haha) an go Auto.
Whats your opinion.
Hahaha now you've thrown a spanner in the works!
The RB was way in the back of my mind an i was just
thinking V6 but now that you've bought that back up
i might look into it again!
My partner has sized the GQ up and its only about 50ml out in width and not much in lenght. he seems to think the bundera will be
to small. but ye we have to size one.
And ye i still want it as light as possible.
Thats y i thought ye go the bundera chassis cause it will be lighter then
the GQ! an go Rex motor cause i thought i would be lighter then
the V6 or V8.
I do love the Sound of a V8 but i still want to be able
to run it.
An ye my partner also thinks the RB motor might be to big
for the engine bay.
But if we were gunna do the V6 or Ls1 he said something
along the lines of bolting it to the chassis???
HAhahah,, Im just telling him what i want and his seeing if
its fee-sable! If he sez no then i think of a new idea!

1uz makes 250hp stock so not sure how you figure the 3sge makes more power? IMO the commo 6 is a waste of space and not worth the effort, if you can afford the LS1 its probably the best choice, personally Id go the bundy chassis and 1uz just to keep it all Toyota.berad wrote:gen 3-4 3sgte making 252hp 330or so nm of torque, more power than a 1uz and a sr20 and its toyota. Toy: 98 TJ with some mods and some bling
Tourer and daily: 120 Prado with some mods
Tourer and daily: 120 Prado with some mods
they make similar power in stock form and almost identical torque, the later 1uz's do outperform the 3s in stock form, although you buy 20 dollar boost controller and put 12-14psi in the motor...... then the 3s jumps well ahead. Still maintaining 100% reliability and unchanged fuel usage obviously varying by how hard you drive the car, normal driving will not change.

I think you will find the wrx motor to be too wide as (correct me if im wrong) they use a boxer engine. Ive read alot about peoples opinion on the rb's as the true to heart 4x4'ers say they're rubbish and have to torque and unreliable etc... But the people who actually go out and do the conversion have nothing to complain about and would do it again in a heartbeat, so i think it comes down to preferance.
The commo v6 i think is also a waste of time, and the 1UZ if pretty much just as light and twice as powerful.
I'd go for the bundera chassis as like others say, keep it all in the Toyota family
I think a four cylinder turbo motor will to small to swing the GQ transfer and diffs and wont have the low down power that you want for crawling over stuff when 4wding. I think a v6 and auto is the way to go and match it up to the GQ transfer case. The swb GQ chassis seems to be the closest match to the size of the rav4. The swb GQ chassis is about 200mm longer than the rav body and the diffs are 50mm wider than the rav diffs, if thats what you want to call them. Use the rear control arm mounts and the K frame mounts on the rav as body mounts to mount to the GQ chassis, that way you only have to make new mounts for the chassis.

The Toyota 1UZ is a small 4 litre modern alloy V8, not heavy, not large.FoxyRav wrote:an go Rex motor cause i thought i would be lighter then the V6 or V8.

The 1UZ would be my pick of engines.
You would still be able to run it, would not be any harder to run than an LS1, would probably be as fuel efficient as a commodore V6.
It doesn't matter what engine you use, it is going to be bolted to the chassis whatever it is.

To answer your question!
Not a huge budget, Thats y im shopping around getting other idea's before
i really decide on what im doing!
But im defently doing something!
The bonus about all this is my partner and brother
have the know how of doing it all, so i dont have to pay
anyone to do any of it.
the only things im going to have to pay for is engineering pass,
then the obvious chassis/running gear- gearbox-engine- ect
I would ideally like to get everything before i start the project
so its all there ready to go.. so ye its not a half finished project.
Im not the type of person who likes things laying around.
