v6 commodore motor conversion
hey guys im new to this forum...hope to get some talk goin....would a v6 commodore motor be feasable for an early rangie conversion,,,would the motor be ok for this

thnks for replying so quickly...i hope to have project rangie up and running soon..got my eye on a 77 rangie 98% complete and in running order for $700.... trim rough and body straight but otherwise pretty good.....can get my hands on a second hand v6 for about $800.....by the time i replace head gaskets...rings...bearings etc...i should have a good motor for the rangie....by the time i strip interior, custom dash, new interior trim, body lift it should be ready for the road, any advice from you guys would be great e.g lift kits etc

My only advice would be not to pay $800 for the V6 engine! way to expensive!! specially if your planning on rebuilding it anyway... you should get a series 2 V6 for about $500 max...
What's wrong with the RR engine in it ??
The still run when they are flogged and you could rebuild it easy,
no blue plate required, fits already, spend the $$ on better rubber and axel upgrades and longer shocks and you will have a sensational off roader (unless you have towing in mind ). If it is off road you want then stick with what it has unless the engines is completely farked (unlikely) or missing ??

My personal feeling is that th V6 commie motors don't have enough torque, a mate has 1 in a 4runner with 80 series diffs and 35's and it's great on the freeway but thats about all.

I looked into V6, V8, Chev ,Holden, when my 3.5 died, ended up dropping in a brand new 3.9 bottom end I picked up for $3k through MR Automotive, was about the middle for conversion costs when you priced reco motors, but bolted straight in reusing my heads, front cover & manifold, 100% legal and insurance friendly. It crapped all over the 3.5 for performance, I could be doing donuts on the beach at 6000rpm, revving at 5000rpm in the driveway or be climbing rocks with 0rpm on the tacho and the ignition light flickering.
Warning though, it did snap axles well in combination with the rear air locker though.

Stick with the 3.5. It may be sliggish off the mark compared to the 3.8 V6 Commodore engine (I suppose we are lumping about 2 toonne of British engeneering here!!!), but works great off-road and cheap to rebuild if you scource the parts for the right price.
Why do most new to Rangies want to piss the 3.5 off. Most soon learn the error of there ways and stick with it, then think it's the best bloody thing.

thnks for all your posts guys, i was only thinking of gettin rid of the rover v8 because i thought that the motors would be very expensive to rebuild also fuel economy was terrible, i though maybe the v6 was a better option. but after reading your posts i may change my mind and stick with the rover v8. thnks again guys will be posting more questions soon.

Have a hunt for a new short 3.9, it only cost about $4000 (including heads reco) all up compared to $3500 for a reco 3.5 litre motor.
