Different 40 front aprons
i have been noticing there are a few different aprons on the FJ40s. at first glance they look the same but up close they are totaly different.
i have a new grill but it only fits an old style apron. any one have an old style one sitting around spare?

There's actually three different front panels.
Very early ones up to about 1971 i think, had the park lights in the lower section. Then the park lights were move to the guards. Both these panels had the round ended head light surround and the grill was interchangeable. Then in about 78/79 they changed to the panel with square ended head light surround. This panel is a completely different pressing to the early ones with different grill mounts and head light surround mountings

Im here for the sausage!
The late type are double skinned at the bottom and rust out, but, unless I'm very much mistaken, my 1980 HJ 45 has the same design front panel but it's single skinned at the bottom, it has not rusted through.
OOPS, sorry about the big pic.

Ok as promised, some pics
1968 FJ40. Grill extends up into opening in bonnet and provision for park lights in bottom
inside
Grill. Badge is not right. Originally would have had a cast alloy badge. If any one has one in real good nik, would be interested in buying it
1976 hj45. Note the rubber donut on the bottom left where the head light surround screwed on. These held the surround off the apron a fraction. Later aprons had brackets spot welded on, and the head light surround bolted to them
1984 bj42. I measured from center to center of the head lights and there is 30mm difference to the 1976 head light spacing
Inside. Grill is just a simple square of expanded mesh
Will get a pick of the 76 grill. but am pretty sure it's basically the same as the 68 grill
And this is an fj25 apron. Pre 40 series. Mid 1950s to early 1960s

excellent!! so i have the 1984 apron and need to swap it with the older 76 style. as per those excellent picture examples.
the reason is that i bought a custom billet grill form the US that a guy had made for his 40 over there (then he had a few extra made). in the US they stoped making fj40s in about 78ish. so he has only these grills for the older apron.

Athol if you have a few bucks all4x4 at Kotara nsw have new fibreglass ones.
and often have spare 2nd hand glass ones.
but if you want original iron its abit trickier to find in decent condition.
-Last time i was at Hunter4wd at lemon tree passage they had a couple of 40s in bits. but this was abit ago.
so while we are talking front aprons.
does anyone know who made the front one on my truck with the landcruiser name? a few people have asked me and i wasnt too sure?
ive guessed ozeast but its unclear.

yeah thanks Dirty Rock Star , I have had them for years. It is on our new website ( which we are still building)www.frp.com.au look under product list, search Toyota, 40/45 series & it will come up (part no TRP06)
I might have to take a new pic of that one as the word Land Cruiser doesnt stand out in the pic.
Note to self---Replace with new pic next week. Mick
