1975 Mitsu j26 Jeep any info on gearbox

Post by Invicta »

I use my SWB Jeep daily so would appreciate any suggestions please.

I have the original 2.4 Ltr narrowblock ASTRON 4G53 engine with
column change 4 speed and Hi/Lo boxes. I've also had an 'all gear' Warn OD from HermTheOverDriveGuy. Drive is 10 spline 29 tooth.

Recently I'm finding it difficult engaging 1st & 2nd when in 2 wheel drive and the OD jumps out of Direct into neutral.

I was wondering if there are any 5 speed boxes around that might fit?

Kind regards,
Bernard

Hmmm very interesting question.
Being a 4G53 I would expect a KM145 to bolt up as the 2wd version KM132 was found behind all the Astron motors.
The KM145 itself isn't a world beater in the strength department but should be easy to get as you guys had the 2.6 Shogun so I'd expect a few to be lying about at breakers yards.
You may have a bit of mucking around to get the gear levers through the floor and the correct mounting set up.
I'm surprised the J26/56 is a column shift I thought all Mitsi Jeeps were all floor shifts even the early Willies models.
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"

Bitsamisin,

Many thanks for this info.

Guess what I'll be doing now. :)

Cheers,
Bernard
