hey all
have a 2002 dualcab hilux, whenever in a rut it just bounces around. sometimes with all 4 wheels on the ground, so it has traction. wondering why ? cheers

Its called pig rooting and anything with open centres and decent tyres will do it without fail. You WILL break stuff if not quickly releasing the throttle.

You can try a different line but Lockers are the only cure.

yer need new shocks, there nearly maxxed out just on level ground, torsion bars are wound up a little. front locker is next on the list for sure

Also called 'hilux hop' typical, mine did it real bad with factory (hard) suspension... but as said lockers help but only because you dont need to drive things with speed and can crawl them (most of the time)

What about different gearing/diff ratios.
My lux has 4.5s(from what Ive been told) and I havent experienced this, I have factory springs still on.

wont effect it. its traction being broken and regained as the car struggles for grip. the torque on the drive line compresses and releases springs etc as well as the car trying to climb and fall back from what ever obstical is stopping you moving forward.

your ratios will change the tyre sspees by a few % at a given rev but will be too minimal to effect this kind of thing.

maybe you just pick better lines / have better flex (to be expected compared to an ifs truck).

You mean SAS, solid axle swap the front.
There are ways of getting just a little bit more out of your front, not much though.
If you want capable, then lock the front end and run decent rubber, but you will never get great flex out of IFS.
If you want flex, then as Berad posted, do a SAS.

You might want to try giving the rear "a lot" of flex first, as this can help push a stiffer locked front very well. Have seen a lot of very capable ISF 4runners with a very flexy rear liffed IFS similar to the snake racing kits for the new luxs....

this is your only option other than sas the front, however rigs with all the flex at one end of the vehicle tend to feel very unstabile as the cab will follow the front ends ground angle and feel very very tippy. milo has an amasing rig but has the same problem due to his back flexing more than the front.

but yeah soften up the back to start with and lock the front if you dont want to go sas of a diferent truck, just be prepared for the front to follow the ground angle.

As above IFS and Flex dont go together, imo dont make the rear too flexy as it makes it even more unstable. Especially on climbs pushing the front skyward and trying to flip the vehicle.

IMO if you get larger tyres on, dual lockers barwork etc and the vehicle isnt going where you want to go then look to sas or sell. Many would be surprised where a dual locked IFS with decent tyres will get.

I have the same model truck mate and you need to jack up the front and check the drop out of the wheels as the car comes up. Your torsion bar IFS will flex best with the bar sitting in the middle of it's travel. This is because of the limit of twist on the torsion bar, you can only get so much up travel with it wound all the way up like that. If you want to keep it up high find somewhere you can flex wheels off the ground and measure the flat sitting height between wheel and arch and then the fully flexed\compressed height off the ground, and then wind the torsion bars back to your current wheel to arch measurement minus the fully compressed one. You will find this will also give you a lot more flex.

IFS is pretty awful for flex, but if done right you can get a IFS ute to flex more than most people think it will. :D
