biggest tyres 4.625 ratio's will handle

Post by OGJON »

hey my terracan is running the 4.625 diff ratios
I'm currently running 32" muddies without any complaints from the diffs, gearbox or engine, in fact the engine doesn't even seem to notice them @ all

just wondering what is the biggest tyre size that the 4.625's will handle??

sorry about that
it's a 3.5L V6 petrol auto, LSD rear
with"
2" suspension lift
2" body lift
no rear swaybar

to run anything bigger than my current 32"s I know I will have to do a fair bit of guard trimming(as it is 32"s only just touch/rub the guards under full flex, but don't get any scrubbing when turning)
33"s fit & drive ok but they scrub a bit on full steering(didn't try flex, but wouldn't expect to get much)
35"s also only just fit but scrub like mad when driving & cannot steer

I was thinking of running 33"s or 35"s for my next set when the 32"s wear out to get a bit extra diff clearance as I've been driving more & more rocky tracks

IMO 33"s with a SOHC 3.5 would be about it.
Heaps of guys in the US run these but the ones that go to 35"s run 4.90's from the 2.8TDI.

I've got 33" on mine (same car/engine/diff ratio). It's _okay_, I'll be looking for some 4.90 gear soon though I think. It's a bit sluggish off the mark, and there is very little engine braking for hill decents, but otherwise the torque converter makes up for a lot.

Incidentally, I've got 33x12.5", 30 mm body lift and 40 mm suspension lift and full clearance of the tyres. I am running -24 mm offset though. However, I think I'd still have clearance at -17 mm offset.
