8" front + 5,29

8" front + 5,29
I am new to this forum and I can tell you that I really enjoy it here...
I have an L200 '97model with 7,25" in front and 9" in rear.
The original gears were 4,875 but I changed them to 5,29.
Now I want to upgrade the front to an 8" diff. I know this is possible and there is available a L.P. 5,29 gear set.
The question is...can I use this L.P. set in a drivetrain made for H.P. set ?
If in a future mod I will install a super select system will it make possible to work together ?

Hi George, Frank here.
You know I checked my emails and we were talking about 5.29's back in 2002 - how time flies !!!!!
To answer your questions I'm pretty certain that a 8" low pinion will bolt in there maybe a little work required like redrilling bolts holes etc but it should fit unless there is a clearance issue with a different crossmember in the Delica design ?
The problem is finding a 8" LP 5.29 - I think you know the required part no.
The super select will work with the LP diff but you will need manual hubs to gain the shift on the fly function.
The 8" HP should also fit unless there is a clearance issue and the super select can work like standard. However there was no 8" HP 5.29 ever made and the LP 8" 5.29 cannot work in the 8" HP housing (they are not interchangeable).
Your best bet is to fit the LP 8" if you can source the 5.29 then at least you can add an ARB locker. Later you can add the super select t/case but will need manaul hubs as expained.
Cheers.

Hi Frank, yes time flies indeed !!!
Nice to see you again fighting in the front line.
Me,back again to a new project with an old good trusty L200.
Yes,I have the part number of the 8" LP 5,29 in my records. It must be MB241981. I didn't know it's so rare in our days. I better start searching...
As an alternative I can use 4,900 or 4,875. Not as low as 5,29 but it is our second best option.
Cheers.

$30 US !!!!!!!!!
Surely it's got to be a typo ?
The factory gears are made in Japan by Asano (one of the biggest gear manufacturers in the world) under license for Mitsi.
Do you know the company that Mr Wong represents ?
I found this company which looks like it ships worldwide http://www.engineparts.cc/Produsts_line ... ucts_id=86 they list rare Mitsi gearsets.
If that price is correct I'd buy 4 - you have nothing to loose.

Lemme know if you end up ordering a set, if there for real or not. My 91 l200 would be up for some 5.29s specially for a 30USD.
And I thot 4.625s were gonna be an improvment over my 4.22s
EDIT:
Read this thread: http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat. ... 14&fpart=4
bout halfway down it says MB241981 is 8in front 5.29

That's a heck of lot less than I paid for my Mitsubishi 5.29s 5 years ago, eh Frank? They've been very good to me and I still consider it money well-spent.
For these gears here, I'd probably give it a go on buying a few sets if I didn't already have a good set. It might be worth it, if that price isn't a typo.

Absolutely, there's something not write with that price - it wouldn't even cover the cost of the material let alone heat treating or machine time etc.
Maybe their an 0.8" 5.29 for some diecast remote control Dakar model
Or the other thing it could be a minimum quantity like 500 sets or something.
Asano gearsets are the best you can buy hence the high price and have the A stamped on the mounting side.

I sent them an email asking for details.
I also asked for availability in stock AND possible custom gear manufacturing. An HP 5.29 for the 8" is not a bad idea , I think...

Thank you for your e-mail.
Regarding your inquiry, sorry at the moment we don't supply MB241981 gear set.

Searching the Mitsubishi ASA_General export no.24 L200(G.EXP/MMTH) no.7 model K72T 2000/4wd(TRUCK) I found that this L200 had the MB241981 in the rear diff.
This is an 1996 up to 2007 model. NOT VERY OLD !!!
Maybe the gears are still available in the markets these trucks were sold.
I believe it is the Thailand market so if anyone has any contacts in this area he can give it a try.

Dear Mr Kerby,
We have stocks for this model(MB241981),if only 2 sets which will be sent by courier,I have just checked the DHL,the courier fee is US198.In my own opinion,do u have other goods which be shipped from your other supplier recently so that we can send sample to your supplier which be combined with your goods.Or do u have agent in China,u can ask him to get the sample from our factory. In fact, our factory has exported CWP more than 20years,so that say,we are expert in auto part in China. So really no need to worry about quality,u had better to order 50sets or 100sets so that we can ship by sea as a trial order, one side u can test your market by our products, others u will count on us after trial order. What do u think?Pls let me know what's your opinion?
Waitting your reply.

I'm an enthusisast for these vehiciles. Buying in mass is not appealling to me. I might be up for paying the 198 shipping fee. There still relatively cheap that way versus the other way to get them, direct from the dealer.
I fully understand your situation.Pls see attached our P/I for your reference, the total amount is US254(include courier fee).Once we get the payment and will send sample to u immediately. Will send DHL tracking# to u then.Anything else, pls feel free let me know.
Thorougly debating it....... tho my rig that these would go in is currently non running its tempting as hell......

UPDATE.
I manage to find an 8" front LP diff from a pajero V6 gen1 (not so easy as you think). I got it from UK.
There is a BIG difference between the LP diff and the HP diff. See pic

This is where the side tube with the saft is attached to the diff.
The tubes are NOT interchacheable , so there are only two options.
1. Use the LP diff with no vacum unit and learn to live with.
2. Use the HP diff with custom made HP 5.29 gears and keep the vacum unit and its benefits.
Need your comments on the first option.[/img]

Yeah I know guys that have done both.
Replaced 7.25" HP with 8" LP to run 5.29 and ARB locker.
I also know of replacing a 8" LP in a Gen 1 to a 8" HP with CAD (the centre was welded) and the CAD was wired to a dash switch to use like a selectable locker. The manual hubs were kept locked.
I also know of plugging the CAD diff mount with a custom made blank (and removing the free wheeling assembly) on a 8" HP and just using manual hubs for simplicity and reliability.
It's a real shame Mitsi didn't make a 8" HP 5.29 it would solve a lot of problems.
The 8" HP is around 30% stronger in the forward direction but weeker in reverse and you get the extra (around 2.5") clearance so parts are less vulnerable to damage (more gap between bashplate).
The only option if you want 5.29's is to go with the 8" LP, if you aren't worried about gearing but want the ARB locker then the 8" HP for outright strength and clearance (with or without the CAD).
If you can get a custom 8" HP 5.29 C&P set made up at a reasonable cost that is approaching factory strength then I would definitely go with that and ditch the CAD for reliability and just run manual hubs (but that's just my personal preference).

Dear George
Ok for us to produce with reveres gear cutting.
25 off £310 each
50 off £255 each
100 off £175 to £185 each
These are estimated prices we would need sample gear to make you an official quotation.
There is a lot of work to make small batch ie 25 off.
All gears are made from forgings and are of high quality.
50% deposit with placement of order.
Thank you
Kevin

I managed to find some time to spend trying to fit the gears in the front diff.
The result...the chinese gears fit but can NOT work properly.
I had two sets and in both cases the gear mesh was NOT the right one.
So, I got a mitsubishi set from the rear diff of a delica and those gears fit and worked nicely.
In conclusion , STAY AWAY from the chinese gears !!!
