I only just put a serge tank in recently but have never had a problem without one though. My pick up in the fuel tank was towards the back so never starved. I use two vl turbo pumps now. One to fill surge tank and one to feed the motor. If one pump shits itself I can bypass surge and still make it home.

3l surge tank with a lift pump feeding it so it constantly overflows back to the main tank.
Bosch 044 motorsport pump with return to the surge tank.
That will handle an easy 600hp and is what I use.

Was there any reason why the VL pumps kept on burning out?
