You just put a shim between the out side of the lsd housing and the last/outside lsd...
Is that where you put it? on both sides?

Yes eveny either side, in the top pic you can see the lsd housing, i shimmed it on that face... the clutch washer sits on that face...

I would have thought putting 1 new washer in will have it loaded up on the one side and still loos on the other, so i would think you would need 1 either side and that would probably lock it up...

Let me know if i'm wrong, i'm no expert

Very cool pics mate
I did ask ash diffs about adding a clutch pack im not sure i understood his respones but shimming it is the first option then extra clutch packs as last resort is what i understood .But ash diffs will talk to you and togeather you'll work out the best option

yeh fully understand what you are saying, my shim packs had next to no wear at 220,000kms (at that date) only shiny and could not see wear so no need to replace them.

I would say shimming them is the first thing, they will take a reasonable amount of wear before you need to replace the shim packs. And even then you would probably wear the whole diff out before replacing the shim packs. Just shim once the diff starts to not work as good...

But at the end of the day, its not hard just got to watch a few things.

Just lay it out when its coming apart take photo's and look at it when its together....

Second hand air locker at that price? I think not.

I think so, look harder......

Cruiser lockers are relatively common since many models used more or less the same diffs. I got one for $300 without gears and one for $600 ready to drop in the car only 20,000km old, just takes time to find them.

they look real good, only thing is the price would appear to be a bit out of most 4x4 owners reach, just over 2k for a LSD when you can get a lokker or air locker for a grand....

For another idea, there is a guy here that puts a plunger in the centre of the lsd with a hydraulic feed line going into it. You then put pressure in when you want it to lockup effectively creating a locker. Works very well and people have had alot of success with them.

the more you shim it up or the tighter you make it the quicker it wears back out again

i have wondered what people mean by shimming i have an lsd in both front and rear of my hj60, 80 series centre in the front and 60 in the rear the centres have different clutch packs spring sizes and retainers. The front 80 series centre i put a spacer either side of the spring to help lock it first attempt was too much and could not bolt the centers together got it right the second time. The manual mentions shims between the housing and the fist clutch plate this is to obtain the correct backlash for the side gears, if you shim in this area to tighten the lsd up you will lose all your backlash? so this did not seem like a good idea to me?? for the font 80 series i had stronger spring made and put in with the shims as well. the 60 centre was near new so just put it in as is but not as good as the front will remove it put in new springs two if it will fit and shims behind springs if they will fit. i thought about truoa idea but could not get my head around a hydraulic line to the centre with it spinning around.I dont quite understand simmo84 about the thrust on the planetary gears i thought shimming in the centre where the spring is would require more thrust to overcome rather than shimming the outside and losing backlash. Theplates are just steel thrust and clutch with oil grooves no special material would love to know how come the nissans are so vastly superior maybe someone could explain. regards andy

if you want your lsd to behave more like a locka pull your hand brake on and drive through it. this is a handy little trick if you have a weel off the ground./ but the hand brake doesn't like it verry much........
