what about an extra cab hilux? same chassis etc as a surf and no hassels with the job and engineering etc. then shorten the back end if thats what you want or tube tray it.rusty_burrows wrote:its not just a hilux it would be a super space cab with a removeable soft top and a small tray like a dual cab
im with above - dont see much point. there seems to be an obsession with chopping up wagons at the moment which dont need to be chopped.
eg chopping an 80 makes sence as you cant buy a landy ute other than a 70 series and they are not full coils.
but each to their own.

the main reason im looking into it is that it hasnt been done before and i think it will look quite good. i dont want to build the same old nissan patrol or hilux i want something interesting and fun to drive
i will start up a build thread and take photos and as im a mechanic the rego and the engeneer is the easy part just doing it wil be different

If that's what you want, then do it!
If everybody listened to the knockers, we'd all be driving stock white, non-turbo trucks with split rims and am radios.
There have been plenty of these chops done in the states and although it's not something that I'd do, I must say that I'm impressed with the biuld quality and finished product of quite a few of them.
Do a few searches and I'm sure that you'll find something similar to what you want.
When it's finished, you'll probably find a few of the knockers complementing your finished product. I know that I'm a fan of anything out side of the square, no matter what make or model.

its not so much the knockers as people throwing around other ways of approaching it/ looking at it.beerdog wrote:If that's what you want, then do it!

an extra cab onto a surf chassis would be better IMO if you want the coil rear, but your still have to SAS the front if you want it to be fun to drive? if what i assume you mean by fun to drive is harder stuff offroad.
personally cutting down a surf makes no sence to me i would look at one of the other options made - as far as being different as mentioned above it will just look like a commonlux.
not that there is anything wrong with that

My boy has a space cab Hilux and we have just picked up a complete Surf with a shanked motor. We are looking at dropping the 'lux body on the Surf chassis - shorter vehicle and coil arse end. Only problem I can see so far is that 2 of the mounts on the Surf chassis will have to be moved to match the rear mounts on the 'lux body.
Just got to get him motivated now!!

chocko just measure up the lenght of the cab and see if the back of the cab isnt gonna fowl wit tyre sizes cause u are going from 113 inch wheel base on a std hilux and a x cab is a bit longer than that to 107 inch of a surf...... i would just get a hilux and graft a surf rear end into it the chassie is the same width. i have done it wit my truck and works well..
38.5 swampers, twin airlockers and a whole lot of right boot
I thought Surfs were only 104", could be wrong though, I measured mine at 106" after moving the front forward 2"big red hilux wrote:chocko just measure up the lenght of the cab and see if the back of the cab isnt gonna fowl wit tyre sizes cause u are going from 113 inch wheel base on a std hilux and a x cab is a bit longer than that to 107 inch of a surf...... i would just get a hilux and graft a surf rear end into it the chassie is the same width. i have done it wit my truck and works well..
Just do it, because you want to do it, not because its never been done, never been done in 2010 is rare and if it hasnt been done there a reason , but as others have said anything you can dream of to do with 4x4s have been done in the US, except for patrols cause there to pov to meet the vigirous standard of the u.s haha (may or may not be false infomation)
I like the look of them, but personally i would put some good body armour on it, could think of nothing worse than dinting shit crap out of a body that has 100's of hours spent on it.
