Need ideas for tyre and wheel options. 33-35". Plus gea

Post by mike_nofx »

Im looking to get a second set of rims and tyres for off-road use.
I Got 31" road tyres on 15x7" which will be used for every day use.

Im looking for some advice on what wheels to get. Trying to decide wether 15x8" or 16x8" would be better, and what offset i should get. I know 15" tyres are cheaper, but i already have some 16" tyres (but these may not be suitable anyway) I know this is a very open question, but just throwing it out there.

Second is the tyres. I want a set of 33" to 35" Mud tyres. I own a set of 35x12.5R16 Creepies which were on my cruiser, the patrol guards look a fair bit smaller, and probably wont fit the 35's without chopping. If they are too difficult to fit, a set of 33's might be better along with 15x8" rims, and sell off the 35's (swap anyone?)

So what im asking is, can 33's fit with minimal effort? would trying to squeez in 35's be a much bigger job? can anyone give a brief run down on whats involved for each?

I'll be fitting a 4" lift, and can add bump stops if required for tyres.

Next is gearing. Mines a 4.2 petrol auto. can anyone tell me what diff gears i would have? and what would be reccomended for 35" tyres?
Can you get away with not changing gearing with 33's?

Sorry about all the questions, im very new to patrols (I can answer all of these questions if they were about a cruiser!)

Thanks!

Some will say 4" lift to run 33s, others will say 2 x 2. Speaking from experieicene, I took the mud flaps off mine and, ran 305/70/16s MTZs with a decent 2" lift consisting of Koni shocks and heavy duty Aurora Springs. I never had any scrubbing issues, never got a castor correction or anything else and I had no dramas at all.

More importantly, what happened to your cruiser?

I ran 33 x 10.50 on mY GU with stock sagged suspension no dramas. Now run 33 x 12.50 Nankang Mudstars with a 2" lift with no dramas either, surprisingly enough :D

Insurance company owns it now! Bit of a funny story actually (probably for another thread, with pics), i ran into the back of my mate in a GQ patrol. I had a winchbar on mine, bar got trashed and i got some pretty bad chassis twisting, it got written off. Mates GQ looked fine really. Just needs a new tail light lens.

This all happened on a tarred road, and we were both still able to 4x4 all weekend.

So once i got my payout for the cruiser, i bought a patrol and the rest of the cash is offsetting my homeloan (patrol was a fair bit cheaper than the cruiser payout was!)

I got to keep all the good bits off the cruiser. If anyone sees a cheap 105 at auctions, avoid it. Its worse than it looks!!

Do you want to sell any of your "good bits"?

What have you got?

Good bits include the 95% 35" creepys. Modified gxl wheels (offset increased by 20mm). Cargo barrier. Pyro and boost gauges. DVD player plus second screen. Dual batt system. Rhino racks.

Most is on eBay at the moment.

How much drama would I have fitting 33x15.5R15 with 15x10" rims?

Rims would be biggest offset I can get.

Yours is a GQ or GU
How much drama? more than it would be worth.. and the 4.2 auto would HATE turning those tyres.

Its a GQ.

Is it the width that would make the 4.2 auto hate turning them? Or the diameter? I will be going min of 33" regardless.

How much worse is the extra 3" width over 12.5"?

Im not going with the 33x15.5" at this stage.
Was in a tyre shop this arvo and seen a 35x15.5" (so same width)
15.5" is bloody massive, much bigger than i had pictured!

Advantage - Can get Brand new MTZ in 33x15.5R15 for $200 each... well under half price!
