Falcon fuel injection

Post by HedgeBoar »

I've managed to get my hands on a complete falcon CPI system to remedy my never ending carb trouble with my samurai (standard 1.3l).

I know the throttle body and injectors have been succesfully used with smaller engines than this with aftermarket computers, and engines a little larger (~2l) will run using the falcon ECU -- it apparently will learn different engines very well for a stock ECU. However, I can't find any examples of the falcon ECU being used on an engine as small as my 1.3.

Does anyone have any experience with the ford CPI system on suzukis?

At this stage, I intend on trying the throttle body with the falcon ECU and seeing what happens, but I suspect the ECU will get confused by how little fuel is required by the 1.3 at idle, and may decide that the lambda sensor is faulty.

If the above is the case, I guess I'm going to have to trick the ECU or get an aftermarket one.

I have a few Ideas on how I could trick the ECU:
--I could get it to think it is supplying more fuel than it is -- either by replacing one of the two injectors with a dummy resistor or by decreasing fuel pressure.
--I could make a circuit to slow the ignition signal going to the computer (similar to a tachometer converter) -- I'm probably going to have to do this anyway since the falcon computer is for a 6 cylinder enigne. Obviously there is only so far I could go with this before the mixture between different cyliders would become inconsistent...

Any comments/experience on the above?

once upon a time holden had comodores with carbys.the 4cyl & 6cyl had the same carby & jets.carbies & no doubt cpi units are designed to provide a air fuel ratio.thats why air flow metres etc.bolt it on i say

Just buy / build a Megasquirt......... dirt cheap, very programmable, surprisingly powerfull and you won't have to try to trick an ECU. thats fundamentally wrong for the engine.

Probably end up cheaper as well.
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

Winner. Even a cheap old microtech/haltech/whatever fuel only computer of Ebay or something will do the job. Then you only need to attach the hardware to the motor. The ECu will allow you to set up the injection correctly for the motor without having to stuff around with "tricking" a ECU that is in the end the wrong one for the motor.

Layto....

Yes I was planning on buying a megasquirt kit at some stage anyway, just thought I'd have some fun trying to get the falcon one to run it in the mean time...

Then your going into it with open eyes......

just didn't want you to head down a path that didn't have a "recovery" option.

Will be interested in hearing how you go as on paper its an unlikely ECU to use.

OK, so the megasquirt system is cheaper than I realised, so I have a kit on the way and will go straight there without messing with the ford system.

One thing I hadn't considered is that I will probably need a plenum chamber between the throttle body and my standard carb manifold.... Although I have seen throttle body injection used on engines without a plenum chamber, I'm not sure how well this will run, seeing as the fuel is not added continuously as with a carb.... Anyone seen a TBI system running without a plenum?

about US$290 for a v2.2 MS1 ecu kit, relay board kit, and stimulator kit.... there'll be a bit extra to spend locally on wiring and connectors and so on but pretty damn cheap really.

I have a Mazda 121 Throttle body injection unit and complete un cut wiring harness from the car and ecu. They are a 1.6 ltr. This may be easier then a falcon setup. Im chasing $200 for it all
look in the bible for rhetts injection
