Mr. Sparky go byebye

Post by Silver_pig_gq »

Finally got my carbie swap completed and back on the car this afternoon and went to start it up but it wouldnt kick.

After further fault finding it turned out to be the spark that was missing which is driving me nuts because its totally unrelated to my carb swap and no longer then a year ago i had the coil, dissy cap and wire connector relaced on the electric ignition.

Ive checked for spark at both the plug lead and dissy lead from the coil and theres nothing. ive got a lumenition electronic system on it but have no idea how it works slash what could go wrong with it.

Voltage at the coil may be the problem but i am unsure as i dont know where to test from or for. Do the lumenition systems have a habbit of dying suddenly? it was running perfect before i took the maniold off then when back on the spark went.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to look/test? or suggest a good mobile auto electrican who can sort it out? or if anyone could pop round and take a look?

Check that they'res no earth strap or mounting point on the back of the inlet manifold, that could be a possibility if you'rte ignition worked before and not now. Also something stupid (because I've done it  ) is put the wiring on the coil arse about.

Just a suggestion, good luck with it.

Checked the earths, everything seems ok. even if it was missing, i grounded the sparkplug the body of the car and still no spark. also i didnt touch the coil so it should be good.

Starter relay, those old rangies electrically are unpredictable and can throw a curly issue into the mix without even touching it. Also they
rtes a fuse that is linked to the ignition on those things (one of three) may cause it to not start.

Your fuel pump is still going isn't it? Nothing to do with the ignition and on old rangies you can't miss the 'tick, tick, tick' noise :D

I'm sure someone else on here will chip in with a suggestion, probably something most obvious too :?

Thanks for the hints Trav. ive checked all the fuses i can find, although all i could see was a small black box with abour 3 glass fuses in it up near the right hand side firewall. should i be looking anywhere else to find fuses related to ignition?

Fuel pumps working fine as i can hear it ticking over as it pumps, so im back to square one!

Well I don't know if it is any help, but on my 82 rangie there is a relay bolted under the dash on the passenger side (you can see it if you stick you head under there)... If I unplug this relay the spark is killed. I have no idea why this relay is there though.

I have disco electronic ignition on a P76 4.4..

Also maybe trying to re-fit points and see if your electronic ignition might have crapped itself. I also remember on one of my old Rangies that the wire on the back of the alternator I left off accidentally when I had to do the head gasket caused me a few headaches, put it back on and it started.

Weird but it's an old Rangie after all, they're not in the realms of normal  Probably why I'm such a entusiast of old rangies, any normal person would have given up by now :D

Good luck with it.

It's all in the fun of owning an old Rangie.. I spent 2 days fixing the wiring in mine! Yet somehow, I strangely enjoyed it.......

This isnt fun! Today i hot wired the coil from the positive terminal of the battery and got it to spark, with me tapping the + of the coil with the hotwire. but as soon as i left it on (hotwired) and cranked the engine it didnt spark, almost like the original + power wire for the coil is robbing the power. but then i went to make it spark again by tapping the + side of the coil again with the hotwire and it didnt spark.

So i gave up, put it all back together and cranked it. It started! ran like a dream. i went for a quick burl round the burbs till she was warm then let it idle for a bit while i hacked me other project round the paddock and then turned her off.

Came back an hour later to start it and drive to gym and it wouldnt start again!

Talk about pain in the arse.

Hmm, have you checked your ignition module? Maybe it isn't switching the primary circuit properly....

Wouldnt know the first thing about checking the ignition module. all i know is it switches the negative side of the coil. was told i have to use a test light or something? but its a lumenition module which ive allready put in the "too hard" basket! and its ironic that is would be the module because i just missed out on one on ebay that went for 80 bucks. bugger
