turbo project 1hz twin scroll TD05hr Subaru water/air
Hi all,
Turbo turned up yesterday.. what a task I have ahead of me. I am planning to attach the TD05HR to the standard 1hz manifold with an adaptor, and install plumbing and wiring for the Subaru water to air intercooler.
I think it should be an early spool up (appx 500 rpm lower than standard td05) with anywhere up to 20 odd psi and 150kw, dependent on tuning and temperatures etc. I will be starting with a low boost say around 7psi and working up from there.
Anyone reckon the intercooler's not big enough?
I am doing this more by guesswork than by expertise...
And I haven't bought the cooler yet.
Oh and this is a VERY budget concious install! $150 turbo. $100 intercooler.. etc.

Many will no doubt say the cooler is too small but for a budget you don't get much choice. Part of the quetion should be do you get suficient benefit for the cost as you will never replicate a matt laminova set up.
I don't know if the cooler is too small but I have one to try as well. My thinking is more along the lines of the Subaru heat exchanger being too small for the application that simply the cooler itself. As long as it flows well and is not to much of a restriction if you put in a large heat exchanger I think it will do OK for the price. Have a look aroound the Nissan section there are a few who have used them on there.

Those superpoo water air coolers are crap, mate fitted one to his 3.3L diesel MQ patrol and it cant keep up even in the slightest.. Even has a full sized ac radiator on it.
You would be better off just running an air/air cooler if money is an issue.

The 105's have shit loads more room between the top of the engine and the bonnet in comparison to the 70 series. You'll find that there is heaps of room for a top mount intercooler, air to air. However, it will be useless to you with out a scoop and a fan on top (must be a very high speed one - I had a davies craig on my 3L patrol, awesome!)
In my opinion.. you can do the turbo entity of the job relatively cheap, however the intercooler needs to be done properly, otherwise it wont be efficient.
My $0.02

A mate of mine has a subi water to air in his gq. he has done a few upgrades to it but it works pretty well.
He has had larger barbs welded to the intercooler, 1" i think. Uses a davis craig water pump and a peugot 206 radiator.
The car is tuned about as far as you can go with a standard gu turbo and rarely sees 400 deg on the pyro. and he tows another gq on a car trailer with it

for simplicity and low cost that will work, I would look at getting a front mount air to air for the 105.
I have looked at mine and there is stacks of room for a large air to air cooler behind the grill. The trickiest bit will be running the hoses.
do a search, there is plenty of threads with pics of FMIC in 80s which are basically the same.
