Here is my 2 cents for what its worth.
Yes, at times the action was a little sparse, but there are excellent reasons for that. The organisers kept the competitor numbers down for round 1 in order to learn how it was going to pan out. They also did very, very little by way of actively promoting this round for the same reasons.
As there was approximately half of what will in the future be a full field, as the teams experienced a few breakages (some worse than others), the remaining number of competitors was quite low.
To me, this shows an incredible amount of "forward thinking". By having the patience to run this round as a bit of a feeling out process in front of a minimal amount of spectators gives the organisers the best opportunity to make a good impression on a larger number of people once they get the promotional wagon rolling.
Another little known fact that tells me that the organisers are committed to this for the long term. The team had been carefully canvassing for a major sponsor in the build up to getting round 1 under way, and had actually had a very lucrative offer placed on the table. Unfortunately, the offer came from a great company, but with a particularly difficult-to-deal-with executive representing them. The boys from the Masters felt that they would not be able to have a productive relationship with this executive, and on that basis knocked the offer back. When you consider that the boys were bankrolling this event out of their own pockets, it was a big call. They believed enough in what they were doing to wait for the right opportunity to come along. The boys faith was well placed, and a great deal was signed off on with the guys from Powerful 4x4 to be the naming right sponsor for the 2010 Series! 16EM are smart enough, and more importantly patient enough to be in this for the long haul.
Rest assured, the team behind the event learnt a lot from today (as was the plan) and I am convinced that Round 2 will be a whole new ball game. Expect the courses to be modded with todays results in mind, as well as a lot more on offer for spectators! I reckon that by the time round 3 comes around, the Powerful 4x4 Australian 4x4 Masters Series will be rolling along like a well oiled machine.
I have every confidence in the team behind the event, and I am really, really looking forward to the next round - as is every single competitor that I spoke to today.
Congratulations on a great, patient start guys. See you at round 2!!

Rick.

Our damage toll - a couple of trailing arms, a steering rod (or two), a panel or two, one rear tail light lens. Not bad all in all for what was probably the least moded vehicle on the track.

There was some brilliant driving - TLCC, Suzuki deserve a mention there.
There was some brilliant rollovers - Nepean scores a mention there for the first one in the first two minutes of competition.
There was some brilliant showmanship - the sight of that little red short wheelbase Bundy gunning it around courses 1, 2, 3 and 4 was heart-stopping and jaw-dropping.

A great day's viewing - the teething problems were minimal and easily overcome. I cant wait till the next round (tho I wonder if the GQ will be fixed by then???)

Great comments and insights Rick, thanks for sharing.

From a spectators point of view (and this event is being angled at attracting and entertaining the crowds they hope to pull in future), glad to see Mark & Wayne taking this step-by-step.

My personal feedback (spectator's viewpoint):
* the two tracks nearest Ferrers Rd were not viewable from the main spectating area. May need a rethink?
* a great innovation was the trials bikes running; gave spectators something to watch. I'd suggest they be 'announced' onto the track when say a recovery is happening, just to bring crowd attention to them
* recoveries went reasonably well, most teams able to self-recover quickly; although the exy did a great job, I saw other (assisted) recoveries with some minor issues (including one vehicle obviously placed there for recoveries, yet not fully equipped to do so).
* the bloke on the mike did a good job ;) but seemed to go missing before the end?
* when this event takes off, perhaps a bit more commentary on how teams are approaching recoveries/assisting 2nd car etc, as not every spectator will know what is going on
* liked how Rick was getting 'interviews' with competitors at times, good interaction.

I'm sure teams will have their suggestions, a couple of observations I had:
* a bit of confusion at the end of the day; some teams had left, others were hanging around (apparently it was in the rules all teams were meant to stay for presentation?)
* inconsistent marshalling (you'll always get that I know, but) as I saw one team clearly had a participant with no helmet on course, who was actively involved in handling straps etc during the timed period (i.e. not after 'time called'). Not sure if it was a navi or manager. Big point when everyone else had to wear helmets in that heat today...

Overall, 8/10 for first effort, well done organisers, marshals and competitors

Great Learning Curve.

Excellent start to a great series.

Tracks held up reasonably well, only minor corrections to be made.

Recoveries worked out quite well once we got into the roll of things.

Overall, top effort to all involved

With that note, im farked, finishing this bourbon and off to bed ;)

That particular person was told by an official (who will not be named) that it was OK to do that course without a helmet. He started the course without a helmet on, but was pulled up by another official after starting, and was made to put the helmet on immediately, so if anything it disadvantaged that particular team.

On another note team BBM 4WD CLUB had agreat time and are looking forward to next round!

Rick was tops on the mic.

For being the 1st time running it was pretty good, and damn that sun was hot

Now a bit of feed back which i hope it helps and might change next series, the viewing from the top is good but when down on the grass its a bit hard to see the action so could it be possible to run a walking track in the middle?

And as someone said get the bikes on the curse to fill in when the recoverys are taking place, they are mad man.

Kinda proves my point; not having a go at the team, just suggesting that the officials could communicate better and be more consistent. Hopefully that will be taken on board as constructive feedback.

Well what can I say, the first round down and plenty of lessons learned.
Firstly I would like to give a huge wrap to all the competing teams, you guys and gals are the best, even when we started off slow, you guys never complained and let us just sort ourselves out. Teams where helping us out with info and advice and not one team was giving us grief and for this we thankyou very much.
To all the marshals and officials a huge arms up to you guys for being patient while we ironed out the bugs, I am sorry I wasnt quick enough with the water at times, but next time we will have a dedicated person bring you guys beverages. I am still trying to get over the chants of waterboy and bobby.
All the camera guys and film crew, you did an outstanding job today, if you all had a dollar for everytime you climbed that hill you would be millionares. Thankyou very much for all your efforts.
Rick, the commentry was great and made for a good entertaing day, hopefully as we get the cars out faster you will have more to commentate on. Also thanks for the words of support above.
To our crew you guys held it together well and overcame situations as they arose, with recoverys and rule calls on the fly. That was my recovery vehicle at the top that failed, it was playing up for a few days prior to the event, I thought it would be ok for the day but I was wrong and on the first recovery it let screwy down, but he went and got his own car and used it instead, you are a champ.
We had a roll over by the nepean guys on course 6 within the first 2minutes of the comp kicking off which nearly gave me a heart attack, but everyone was ok with minor body damage.
This was the first comp I have attended and not had a camera so no pics from me.
We have some rules to iron out and some concepts to change, but we will get there.
How good where those trials bikes, hopefully they all enjoyed themselves and come back again. Never seen so many smiling bikers.
Again a huge thankyou to all competitors, marshalls and spectators, thankyou for your patience, you made our first event hassle free .

Cheers Mark and Wayne

I must say, I sort of approached today like a bit of a "warm-up", and basically used the event to gauge what we would need to make the second round awesome. I probably did not place as much emphasis as I should/could have on the actual commentating and interviewing. The plan is to take what I learnt today and ramp up the next effort several notches. One of the things I will be looking to do is to give the guys competing as many chances as possible to pimp their sponsors. IMHO this does not happen enough in our sport, and we need these sponsors (no matter how big or small) to get the proper recognition for their investment in 4WDing.
After today I have also learnt a few more things that can be done a lot better, and am looking forward to implementing them and seeing the results.
Thanks for the kind words and thoughtful feedback though, it is great to get other perspectives!

Cheers,

Rick.

Was a pleasure to be a part of the 1st of many more events you guys have for us..
Rick, great job mate, cant wait to watch the disc...Hope you didnt get too sunburnt....
The tracks themselves were great and the rules we are given through the course compliment them.
