The rear drums on my 83 hilux will not bleed up. The fronts bleed up nicely but the rears keep spitting air. As a result I cannot get any pedal so I can drive the car. I have put loads of brake fluid through and still nothing.
Things I have tried,
Replaced the master cylinder, however I am still dubious about this and am going to reseal it also.
Adjusted the rear brakes. They were a fair way off the drum. Now the handbrake works. Also up for some new shoes soon too.

Drums could be too warn, adjusting ciezed, and like you said, shoes warn, the wheel cylander pistons could be moving too far, causing all the brake fluid from the pedal into the wheel cylinder, and only enough to move pistons a bit, so shoes not touching (enough).
It leaks fluid out the back of the master cylinder. Shoes are pretty worn, but it seems to me that the braking system is sucking air in somewhere, hence why we are resealing the master cylinder. If brake fluid was disappearing into the wheel cylinder would this cause a buttload of air to be dispelled when I am bleeding the system?
Yeah the air is comingo ut under pressure. The proportioning valve is the bit that has the arm connected to the diff? Applies more brake when under load? The arm on mine is bent way out of shape so I doubt it works at all.
Also up for some new shoes soon too.
