I thought steel cables were better for those that use them outside of comps and such due to not requiring as much maintanance.MightyMouse wrote:except for the @#$% steel cable

Not picking on you Dexter but that kind of mentality is simply for the lazy.Dexter wrote:I thought steel cables were better for those that use them outside of comps and such due to not requiring as much maintanance.MightyMouse wrote:except for the @#$% steel cable
Kinda like - yeah I know synthetic is better, lighter, easier to use, and safer but nah I couldn't be stuffed cleaning and respooling it after a run so I'll just stick with steel. No different to cleaning the snatch strap after a dirty snatch (no pun intended) which should be done every time.
I've got a bit of a "thing" against steel winch cables.
Way too much stored energy in the cable - when you have seen a steel cable break ( even with a "damper" ) you'll be converted - i like the way synthetic just "falls".
And perhaps its just me... but its difficult to stop steel cable kinking which significantly reduces its breaking strain.
And its a pita to remove and respool from maintainance
And........ well i just have it in for steel cable.

( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

Not to mention the weight and those mongrel tiny broken single strand splinters ..MightyMouse wrote:I've got a bit of a "thing" against steel winch cables.

" If governments are involved in the covering up the knowledge of aliens, Then they are doing a much better job of it than they do of everything else "
Caused Moose to whale on the free spool lever to try and unhook the tensioned cable and break it.
i would have thought that a broken lever would be the expected result of this treatment (abuse) of even an expensive winch . not sure maybe its just me but i find a bit of sympathy goes a long way towards getting a good service life out of equipment
