surely this is covered elsewhere but i cant find it.
my brother has just brought a beautiful old 45 petrol (2f?) he reckons it revving its ring out at anything over 100 kmh. its stock, on 31's and a 4speed.
he has been told that fitting a 5 speed out of a 60 is a big job and will cost about $1600 for all the parts, but on the other hand another bloke has told him it's a piece of p!ss.
what is the easiest option?
what is the cheapest option?
what is the best option?
im hoping these 3 options are all the same.

im hoping these 3 options are all the same.
otherwise, same 60 series box and change teh rear diff to a 73/75 series one or a late model 40 series with the integrated handbrake

No need to change the whole diff just the backing plates to 60 series with 75 series cable
dont forget about tail shafts
And you need to dint in the chassis cross tube behind the gearbox to clear the uni joint.
I have a 45 series 5 speed in my troopy that i carnt decide wether to part out or not but i whould want a bit more than $1600 for it with the tail shafts.
(like hens teeth)
I'd go for bigger tyres 1st
Standard tyres are about 32"
Plus you wont fit in any tranfer case that has the park brake fitted on the rear of it

As said, the easiest option would be bigger tyres. Personally I think 33's might be the go since it is stock with no suspension lift and should be enough difference to make it rev nicer at 100. However you would be get away with 35s also. Probably cheapest option also. Best option would be to go the whole hog, do it properley and put a 5 speed in, but you can't win em all.

in any case for 5 speed there are other fab items anyway, ie the shifter position, transfercase lever position etc.......

Depending on what year it is 79 onwards should have the correct rear housing to take the later drums.
Also if it is 79 > should have the correct handbrake needed to fit to the 60/75ser 5spd rear output shaft has to be changed. The cross member may need to be moved not to sure been a while since ive had a look under the later 45's.
You will need to source a 3F bellhousing and clutch fork for the conversion. Gearbox will go onto the original crossmember if later model otherwise you will need to souce a cross member and get the later model handbrake assembly and output shaft.
It is a bit of a job to do both tailshafts will need to be modified also.
Best bet is to go up in tyre size first and maybe start collecting parts for the 5spd conversion like a complete 60ser with a 3F in it.

so..... a mate has a 60 for sale with a 12ht (factory turbo diesel), cheap...... my advice is to get another 2f or even 3f and rebuild it for gas (240l gas tank already) with shaved head, flat top pistons, gas research so on and so on, but the idea of a 45 with 12ht sounds pretty good! what does the outers mob reckon?????

well the little brother has gone and bought that 60 series with the 12HT.
any snags he will encounter removing the 2f and 4speed and transfering the 12HT and 5speed box across? or can anyone point me in the direction of a build already done?

1975 45 series will probably have drums all round, so keep the discs and the rear drums. The diff housing in a '75 FJ45 will have 8 bolts holding the backing plates on, the 60 series will have four. You can re-drill the backing plates or get a later model (47 series have them) 80? onwards housing that will take the 60 backing plates. There is a tube cross member (there was in my 82FJ45 anyway) that may foul the 5 speed transfer case. Some heat and bash/bend it, some cut and move it back. I am pretty sure the engine mounts welded to the chassis for the 2F will be different to a diesel, probably just cut them off the 60 chassis and weld on, you will need 40/45 2H engine mounts to suit (60 series is wider by around 2" I think??)
Springs are different, get his reset or new ones. flog off parts from the 60 to pay for the bits you need.
Probably worth while pulling the 12HT down and giving it the once over, if it has not be rebuilt it will probably have the standard pistons that flog out the top ring groove, mine have 450K on the clock and they were starting to go. There was stuff all wear in the bore, so you may get away with just pistons rings bearings and a hone. Well worth doing all properly if you are keeping the car, engine will last for 20 years if maintained/serviced properly. Same with the 5 speed box, check the out put shaft in the transfer case, they flog out the spline the input gear (transfer case) goes on. there is an aftermarket gear available that has extra spline on it (has the spacer as a part of the gear for more spline) shop around as plenty of quality aftermarket parts available rather than paying big dollar at Toyota.
