Sierra.. Leaf Sprung VS Coily which one?

Hey guys, which suspension setup is better for offroad? Im in the process of purchasing a Sierra, I know you can get 5 inch suspension lifts for the leaf sprung, but ives only seen 2inch max for the coilys...

Also do any of the year 96+ models come as leaf sprung? Or are they all coilys?

yeah the 96 models come out coil sprung only pretty sure.

Coil is the way to go.

It depends on what sort of 4wding you plan on doing with it and whether or not you plan on modifying it much later on down the track. If you look around here you will find most vehicle on 31's or more are leaf sprung I imagine there is some valid reasoning behind that.

ive had both and the coil is far better in comfort i loved the coil
the leafsprung is a much stiffer ride hurts the back and tends to jump
around alot more
so from my experience id say go the coil sprung youll love it

Ok, how do the coilys performe off road, I got told leaf sprung is alot easier to mod and better offroad, and coilys better on road...

dont buy a coily if you want to mod it or drive very hard as the bracketry on the diff and associated parts is reported to be quite prone to breaking/bending.
That being said a stock coily is about as close to comfort as you can get in a sierra.

Go leaf. Then after a few years experience, mod to proper coil setup.

Depends what you drive also.

Hardcore = leaf

Softcore = coily

Because it's absolutely impossible to weld a little bit of extra steel to strenghten things up. It's fairly simple, don't drive like a dick and things don't break.

i have personally owned both i sold my coily to buy a leafy coily was comfy and all but mods are expensive and parts are a hell of alot rarer. and mods on a leafy are so much easier and are also a lot more interchangeable between other zooks where coily stuff fits a coily and thats it basically. but the comfort of the coily was amazing so you need to decide what you want to do. also mods on a coily cost a heap more to.

coily:

BAD
No reduction gears available unless you change to a leafy tcase
chain driven transfer tends to skip due to worn chains
weak bracketry/control arms
no front locker option
weird length diffs - cant change with leaf gear
rarer than leaf
engines have a dendancy to go bang
cannot lift as high
usually dearer

GOOD:
good dash/interior panels
better ride onroad
better looking front
usually less k's


I would go with a leaf model.

more flex my arse, they have bugger all and are very hard to get much flex out of. Also wouldn't say heaps better ride eithr, they are both swb which makes forcthe choppy rough ride. They are probably nicer to drive as the cabins are more solid with better noise insulation.

There are heaps of threads on this topic and most will say a leafy for any sort of missed 4wding, while the coily is fine as a stock or daily driver

Sort of yes. You will not a get a '96+ leaf sprung "Suzuki SJ". But you can get a Maruti, which is basically a LWB Sierra with leaf springs, though a 1L motor and made in India. I think they stopped importing Marutis about '99 or 2000 (someone else might clarrify).
To be honest, a Maruti might be the best option of the lot, you get a newish (for an SJ lol) car, and you get a LWB which will eat a shorty for comfort (leaf or coil), not to mention the vast array of advantages with a LWB.


Some of you guys really crack me up though :lol:
oh and if you think SWB leaf sprung Sierras are uncomfortable, drive a stocko SWB LJ :finger:

Thanks for all the info guys.. I really appreciate it :)

I think ill go with a 94 model soft top, or around that model...

However,, I came across a few "delux" models, and the interior looks pretty cool, so if I'm lucky to get one, i'll be laughing...

Hopefully I can once again have a fun little 4wd when I get my hands on a sierra... And i'll make another thread of it...

Really wish I got a sierra instead of my vitara though, you can do so much more with Sierra's, But I must say I still had alot of fun in a vitara untill it ended up on its roof :P

to tel the truth i had more fun drivingb my coily with 30mm lif, 4.1 gears and 31 then i do driving my vit with the twin lockers
and i dont bottem out as much
i bent the rear arms but thatwas my fault i put plastic bushers in stead of rubber butr never had a problem with brackets
and i bent the panhard rod on the front
saying that i drove it like i stole it so it held up pretty good

4 in lift
winch,lockers,gears, 31's
