would be good too see how this goes, iv got a commy aswell with a supercharged v6 putin out heaps of torque n always joke about throwin it in my spacecab.

Why would that be any better than the nissan 6? If you're going to go through the expense and effort of an engine conversion you'd want something with a bit more power.

V6 might be an improvement for a hilux but not for a GQ

having one in a 4wd smaller than a patrol, i think you might be somewhat dissapointed in the torque.

its been discussed before.

Mate had one in a GQ shorty, and loved it.. He spun a main bearing in his 308, took it out and fitted a V6 he had at home. He rebuilt the 308, but liked the 6 that much, he left it in there for 2yrs.

But if you were buying everything from scratch, you would go V8 for all the hassles there are.

but as said WHY
even if u have a v6 motor and box lying around (and who doesnt )dont bother
i very much doubt a V6 commo donk in a heavy GQ would be near as good or even close to wat a 4.2 is
also for the $$$ and effort the v8 wins hands down
but if thats wat u want , then sure go for it

ok wat do you guys think about a tb45 instaed does everything line up eg. engine mounts, crossmember, will my tb42 auto bolt straight upany recommendation do not want to go v8 hence it is still a daily driver\weekend warrior and want to watch fuel economy, rego, insurance

you will get equal or better economy out of some V8's over the TB42 or TB45

bogged he was asking a question about boltups, not about conversions, or economy, sure they are thirsty motors, but the tb45 bolts in, how ever, the tb48 to an extent... bolts in aswell :D and thats a much better motor, i know of one little unit pushing 160 at the wheels :D

dont want to get flammed for mentioning economy here
but
the TB42 AUTO do love a drink
for a power upgrade from that itll be only v8 sorry
v8 would hardly use more fuel,rego is wat $150 more a year,hardly an issue really
insurance could be an issue, depending on other mods and age
wats the cost difference between a v8 conversion as apposed to a 4.5 or 4.8

i would say about 10 grand. i worked out a ls1 wuld cost me $12000 with me making all the mounts and doing all the labour, where as you can buy a tb45 for well under $2000 which will bolt in, having said that i'm going v8. as others have said dont bother with a v6, ive driving a cruiser ute with a v6 and i rekon dad's std diesel troopy goes harder.

yeah ok,
the LS 1 conversion would be dear
but how about $$$ for an injected 5 litre conversion
can pik up a complete running 5 litre for the 2 k mark
just curious thats all
how much more power does the 4.5 or 4.8 have over the TB42
and how much more fuel hungry are the 4.5 or 4.8 compared to the TB42
and how much power do the 4.5 and 4.8 have compared to injected 5 litre

i have a surf with a supercharged V6 VT statesman engine in it and My GQ TB42 turbo would eat it EASY
GQ LWB 4.2 Straight gas TURBO 35inch pedes, mods about to start. FOR SALE - 92 Surf, Holden 3.8 VT Supercharged V6 auto

I can understand the idea of a V6 engine, they are cheap and easy to find, just go fishing and pull up a buoy chain, you are likely to find one. :twisted:

Cheap and as much as I am not a Chev fan (I am Ford bias), you can not go past a V8 Chev diesel, I don't think there is another cheaper diesel to rebuild and think of the torque, something a serious fourby should think about.
Why bother with the torqueless buick motor, if they didn't have such a low first gear in the auto they would have been a dud in the Commondore too.
