My GQ has a big crack in the diff

Post by create »

I noticed a small puddle appearing under the front diff pumpkin on my GQ. I cleaned up the area and left it. When I came back the next day and had a good look I found I have a hairline crack in the weld about 50mm long. Can I drain the oil, grind back and then mig weld it?

yes you can, but it will crack again one day! best to get another housing when one comes up cheap but a weld will get you through for a while.

why will it crack again if cleaned properly and maybe even a very tinny hole drilled in the ends of it and then welded up real good?

mine had numerous cracks happen in the same spot ... 14 on one trip alone !

had it done in all sorts of ways and by professionals as well as myself ... nothing stopped it happening again.
later housings [after 92 i think] are stronger.

i would suggest bracing the housing and then welding it up.
