100 Power Upgrade

Post by Old Man White »

Guys, some time back a lot of you put some answers together in relation to a power upgrade for my LC100 Petrol Auto running LPG....like 3 x tanks holding a total of 186litres plus 95 petrol.

The comments have all been digested & still the deal is not done. The consensus was to motor swap to a 1HDTFE complete with 5x speed & transfer case.

As most of you know these are a very expensive item, even s/hand & a low klms very hard to find these days...........however another thought is to swap to a Toyo V8, make whatever improvements are necessary eg Headers, Exhaust flow, maybe a chip & enjoy the benefits of low cost LPG motoring.

Chev is a possibility as well, but would prefer to stay with Toyo for servicing reasons as whole unit is a tow horse these days for caravan touring.

Thoughts....comments....pros & cons please.

PS advice on who to use in the NSW region would also be appreciated

Why not a LS1? Can be found for around $1500 in decent condition, HEAPS of power, Mark Adapters have a kit for them and the guy that does the loom in on here too. For $5-8k inc labour your done and still can use the gas. Has more power and torque than the 4.7 from toyo and the power upgrade options are endless (i have a 870hp version sitting in my shed :D)

Parts, servicing etc is simple, if you do end up killing it its $1k or so for another.

Am surprised at your pricing, but that`s more in line with my own thinking...would have liked to go 5 speed, but the mob in Geelong are not ready to release there latest product just yet. However with enough HP the additional gear might not be necessary.

I guess you have some names/addresses of workshops in Brisbane able to do the job.....particularly the wiring loom, if so, please post or send me a PM...Cheers & Thanks

capa do a supercharger option for your motor....240kw 550nm bolt on....about 7k reliable and a couple of days drive in/out. Give Motsons a call up your way and have a chat to them.

yeah...had completely forgotten about CAPA, I know Motsons in Brisbane, good clean workshop & seem to know what they are doing.

Have just checked the CAPA website & sent them an email, thought they were in Adelaide, but Berri SA is very near to Mildura & I will be journiing that way shortly....thanks for the advice !!

The dyno figures for the cruiser are impressive & cost is pretty close to those you have suggested........would think an "intercooler" might also be a good investment, thinking of long term reliability !!....what do you reckon ??

I used CAPA charger on my 80 with 4.5 motor, and I used a Safari air to air intercooler for a 1hdt front mount.

Having had both turbo and supercharged 80 series 4.5's turbo would be be my choice, especially for dual fuel, though vapour injection would be better than a suck through system for lpg.

Your engine you have now goes as good as a 1hdfte, it isnt as economical though LPG has made it cheaper to run around town than the diesel engine.

The supercharged V8 and 4.5 six engines we have supercharged are generally no worse than the standard engine for economy, and normally at least 10% better.

I used my superchrged petrol cruiser for outback trips etc, with long range tank, and no LPG, and there is a write up on it in last Jan 4x4 action mag, you may be able to read the jpegs, or still get a copy, may help.

Auto-Craft........am very surprised with your advice that the current 4.5 has about the same power as a 1HDTD, without checking would have thought the turbo diesel would eat the old 4.5 both in straight HP & torque.

Perhaps the leveler is the 3.5T`s of caravan siting on the rear bar !!.

The only downside to a continuation with LPG is whether or no you wish to do remote area travel where the only available fuel is diesel........we have done a reasonable amount of that in previous years & our more recent travels have worked out fine....so the upside with fuel cost is a real bonus.

Another thought thrown in by "VooDoo" is to go with a Chev LS1 engine with Marks conversion kit. According to him the overall cost would be a far bit cheaper due to the s/hand cost of a low k motor....but am still checking this out.

Best way to do it is with a LS1 and 4L60e Auto. The Toyota Auto can be a bit tricky to get shifting correctly with the LS1.

KIt for thr Auto is

MFK1195AE 4L60E-L/C80/100 HF2A AUTO T/C
Adaptor housing, extension housing, coupler shaft, adaptor housing oil seal, bolts, and instructions – to suit 4L60E to Land Cruiser 80/100 series HF2A transfer case previously fitted with a 4-speed automatic. $1,175.00

Image

MFK1765
E/M KIT GEN3-L/C 1FZ/1HZ/1HDT 08/92 ON ENGINE DRIVEN FAN
Left and right engine block brackets, A/C Compressor Bracket, Cast Alternator Bracket and Steel Interface Bracket, Water Pump Pulley, Reverse rotation fan, Fan clutch, Drive Shaft Spacer kit, all required bolts, Nuts, washers and Instructions to suit Chevy Gen3 V8 to Land Cruiser 1FZ 4.5 $1600

Personally im going to use thermo fans not the engine fan and will likely make up my own brakets for mounts, AC, Alternator etc (Saving $1600)

4L60e is around $500 and can be built tough (i have a contact for that)
Engines will vary a LOT. Try and get a VY or newer. VZ can be a pain with the Electronic throttle (as can VE engines). They arent worth any more than 2k though. Loom best sourced via killalux as its not much more for him to supply than it is for you to buy and send to him.

Stick with the 4.5 and boost it, you will find it will make plenty of power and torque, without conversion headaches.

I havent found a remote trip in mine an issue, with 185 lt rear tank and std front 90 lt, and could add a 145lt front if I needed more for a canning trip, or similar, I have done Canning, and other remote trips, MAdigan line etc, with Petrols, and diesels, and petrol will get you everywhere if planned right.

The cruiser auto works very nicely, and I would not ditch it for even the l85 version, the cruiser box is a better box.

And a conversion wont be cheaper on a post 95 boosted 4.5 cruiser.

Pre 95 use different AFM and puter.

The long stroke straight 6 makes oodles of torque, and has better engine braking than the ls engine also.

I turbo'd my 4.5L 105 and its making 182kw @ the wheels. Through an auto with no intercooler running on 33s with a very rich tune. So rich it stalls at the lights. <--not good. Most people think its a diesel because of all the black smoke coming out of the exhaust. But that just makes it more of a surprise for them when the lights go green.

Should be going back for a retune some day. And 240kw @ wheels isnt that far out of reach with a better tune and decent intercooler.

I still get 1000kms out of a tank as it is... Mind you the tank is 275L all up.

V8Suki...thanks for the vote of confidence, nice to know that your engine swap worked out fine & you are happy with the decision.

As a matter of interest how long ago did you do the engine swap & roughly how many k`s has it done since the changeover ??
