hi people i have a EL or NF fairlane 5.0L in my forby ive got everything done but im haveing problems with the ignition timeing.
When i ground the STI wire to start the IOER test to set the timeing the book says set it at 30 -32 degrees wich ive done and works fine but when i start the car in normal mode the time timeing works fine under 2500RPM but as soon as you go past that point the timeing drops to about 10 degrees and the thing is that gut less it bearly moves, and if you try rev it more it starts to almost call it a backfire out the exhaust.
But if i put it back into IOER test mode it revs nice and no problems right to rev limmeter.
ive tryied new dizzy modual, TPS sensor is working ect
i dont know what to do next does any one have any ideas.

Assume you have wired a diagnostic plug into it? No codes? Do you have a wiring diagram? Could possibly be a knock sensor fault.
You have about 2.5 minutes from when you ground the self test input connector to check/adjust your timing or you have to disconnect and reconnect to ground again.
Was it playing up like this before you adjusted the timing?

It has a few codes but ones that idon't think would affect any thing just fan out putts a/c stuff ect nothing to do with the engine.

the engine is only just put in the car.

Yeah, I believe they are 2 different things. One is Tranmission Position where you feed the ECU 5V to tell it it's in gear. The other is a VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensor. If you have a wiring diagram with the pinouts from your ecu you should be able to find the VSS input pin. I can only speak from my experience with the EF 6cyl motor and it really needs to be there.
In the falcon it is a sensor on the box that sends a voltage signal to the instrument cluster which is converted to a square wave signal that is sent to the ecu. Not having the instrument cluster means you need to use a speedo transducer (speed sensor) that piggy backs your speedo cable and (using an inline diode on the signal wire) sends it's signal to the VSS input pin on the ecu. On mine it caused a fuel cut at about 4000rpm when it was missing it's signal and revs freely to 5500rpm since I sorted it. Seeing as in your case you're getting a timing retard problem and at a different rev range it might not be the problem but perhaps that is a difference with how the EF I6 and the EL V8 deal with a lack of VSS signal. Something to think about anyway....
And for what it's worth. My motor was also from an auto and I under advice from my sparky I didn't need to do anything with the Transmission Position. It still throws up the fault code saying it's not there but it all works fine without it. Again this could be a difference with the 2 motors/Management Sytems.
My suggestion would be to get onto one of the ford forums and ask for some assistance. http://www.fordmods.com/forums.php is a good one. Chances are someone on there will have experience with your problem and tell you how to fix it.
