Howdy peeps...
so can any 1 help me with my transmission?
yesterday she just lost all drive but still was reving out to where it would normaly be at travelling at 60ks...
i pulled over, went thru the gears and nothing, just rev'd out! i turned the car off, started her back up selected R and she went. Selected D and she went for maybe 100m then the same thing again, no drive but revs!
checked the trans oil-all good! The ECU has been playing up a bit too, it wont always select the 1-1 ratio once i hit the 100kph mark, could this be related???

A similar thing hapened to a mate's camira a few years back, turned out to be a blocked filter restricting fluid to the pump.

I hope you have a lot of money in the bank.

similar thing happened to bloke in our club, the oil lines got blocked and rooted the whole gearbox. $4000 later, he was on the road again.

Give Rodney at Wholesale Automatics in Bayswater, and tell him exactly what the symptoms are, he knows GQ boxes backwards.

DON'T drive it anymore. The filter is getting blocked up and means no oil gets to the gearset so it will melt causing complete trans failure and complete rebuild.
If you are lucky you have caught it in time so will be a relativly cheap fix. But still likely to be a couple K to replace frictions etc.

Like Bogged said, talk to Rodney.

Couldnt he have just bought a complete 2nd GQ for $4000 and swapped the gearbox? Then be left with a whole running GQ minus auto for spares?
I bought my GQ for $4000 with a fully reconitioned auto....

Alternatively, arent these boxes only a few hundred 2nd hand anyway?

AUTO PROBLEMS 89 MAVERICK WAGON


I installed a duel battery in to my truck and in doing so had to move the breather pipes from the gearbox/transfer box in the engine bay. Not thinking any more bout it i attempted a water/bog hole and proceded to swamp my truck for funnies. Got stuck in the hole with water/ mud comming inside. Not realising water/mud is entering my auto gearbox.
A week later started to lose gears. took to mech and found the water ate away my cluth plates............$3000 later fully rebuilt auto box.

Hey mate, The overdrive issue could be related to this new issue but I'm not sure if it has anything to do with your ECU. The GQ I just just did up and sold had lots of auto problems. Originally it had the issue you have at the moment, The problem is that your torque converter is slipping due to a lack of ATF flow. In my case it was burnt oil and a blocked Filter/Strainer. If your ATF is black, It needs to be changed. It should still be a red colour. If you havent changed your filter for a while, It would be a big help. You can buy an aftermarket Auto filter kit which comes with the filter and a new gasket for around $40-$50. You just dump your Fluid out the auto pan, Unbollt the pan. 4 bolts retain the filter. replace it. Put new gasket on and bolt her up. Put new fluid in and your away. If however, Its been starving for fluid for a while, You might have chewed up your clutch packs......As mine did. It ran for a few weeks after doing the filter and oil, Then I had another problem, It would just rev out to redline in 2nd and not shift into top gears. Spoke to my mate who's an auto tranny mechanic and he asked it there were lumps in the fluid when I drained it originally. My answer was yes and then it cost me about $1300 to have the high speed clutch pack done in it.
Hope this helps and I hope you avoid the costly exercise of clutch packs.

And what about the several liters of fluid that is still inside the torque convertor? If you go to the hassle of changing fluid then make sure you flush the TC as well.
