shorty 40 with holden 253 and 'BJ 5 speed?' box
I have a 40 series cruiser with a Holden 253 and a 5 speed box. It wont go into 5th (just grinds). The box looks the same as a mates Bundera, it looks like a steel 4 speed box with a 5th gear section added in before the transfer case. I'm wondering if this is a popular conversion? Are there many reco'd 5 speed boxes getting around? Any light would be appreciated
The 5 speed H55F gearbox is the same as the 4 speed H41, just with the extra section on the back that contains 5th gear. You can either rebuild it, exchange for another unit or even buy a new one from Toyota, but that = $$$$$. Keep in mind that if the gearbox is from a 40 series originally, the top plate is different to the ones found in 60 and 75 series 'Cruisers. Ergo, the gearstick ops out of the floor in a different spot.
