Yep, i have considered a 1JZ or 2JZ. Proberbly what i would end up with.
I also thought about the newer 1KZ turbo from current prado but way way to expensive it seems.

Was just a thought i was having. 3S being a bit more compact thats all.

Does a 1JZ/2JZ bolt upto a R151 ? (I did search and find a 1GGTE and 1GGZE do atleast to the G52 gearbox but not sure about the R151)

Well I can tell you a 1JZ will fit cause i have done it!! The pattern on the R151 gearbox (not the bellhousing) is identical to the R154, the problem being the R154 has an input shaft length of 190mm compared to the R151's 160mm. The best way to solve the problem is to buy an R151/150 bellhousing to 1JZ/2JZ from Dellow automotive, as I did.

3S-GTE thats the celica AWD motor right? I am not a fan of them they seem to be less relaible than the J series. Go for a 1Jz or 2JZ, twin turbos is cooler, and the motors are more reliable, and have power to spare really wake the bundera up.

Looks like 1JZ / 2JZ it is then.

Anybody know what the deal is with different engines than came with car and the 15yr rule.

Given the LJ71 is about to be on its way, could i do the swap, get it engineered and then rego'ed.

Seems easier than doing it later ?

id rego first then you can test drive it after you've put the motor in. and see how it goes. then get a engineers cert. and you will know how much it has improved.
