2f and 3f heads are as likely to crack as each other, they are pretty much the same (you can put a 3f head on a 2f bottom end from memory). metalurgically they are very similar, so:

whoever reco'd your 2f didn't know what they were doing obviously.

the mechanic that reco'd my 2F has done a few previous engines and always ran beaut!.

Ahh Ok.... And Yes I Think 2F and 3F's Are Very Similar, But Yet If I Had To Choose Between The 2... I Would Definetly Go 3F...
even if you were selling a 2f?

Haha.. Show's How Much You Noe Buddy!... If That's True Than How Come The 3F Motor Was Covered In The Roothy's 4WD Custom Guide No.23, He Only Covered 65 Engines... Here's The Spec's For The Motor Andy.. 3F 4.0L SIX (60 Series 1981-1990, 70 Series 1985-1992, 80 Series 1990-1992 LANDCRUISER) (POWER: 110KW. 4200RPM, TORQUE: 284NM. 2200RPM).. But Yeah Still Can't Beat A Diesel Engine...

The B is getting a bit tired, blowing a bit of blue smoke, and with having to replace the clutch anyway, would the 3F be a worthwhile conversion? I can get the 3F for the near the same price as a new clutch. More ponies and torque, the only part i'm hesitant about is straying away from the diesel.

Anyone have any thoughts?
For what it's worth, I wouldn't go for the 3F. It won't be a straight forward swap and the petrol engine will use buckets of fuel and run ordinary on hills. I know the price may be attractive now, but you will pay later.

If you are looking for more power look at a 3b and maybe turbo or 13bt with factory turbo. I have lived with my bog standard 3B for about 8 years now, driven as far as Airlie Beach (from Brisbane) and now do competitions. Only now am I worried about a bit more power as it would be handy in comps and to tow the trailer (with comp tyres and spares etc) to the comps. Assessing all options and even buying a mint rebuilt 2H with DTS turbo, I have decided the best option will be to turbo the 3B. Why? Less weight, easy to run, cannot be killed (when properly taken care of), cheap to run, great power down low, less likely to put strain on other compenents and break diffs, axles, CV's etc. If you're dead set on petrol, think LPG or EFI.

Go 4x4ing with someone who has an old carb petrol engine and see for yourself, then decide which way you want to go.

Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

Agree with Rick and the rest. Throw a new clutch kit in and drive it. 3F is definately not an improvement on what you've got. Both engines suck balls equally. :finger:

I knew if I hung out long enough i'd get some helpful answers . I'm far from dead set on petrol, I prefer diesel. I'd love to put a cummins in it but I don't think funds will allow.

I'm not really chasing more power, it'll spend its life in low range so the B would be fine for my needs, it's simply because I think the old girl is a bit shagged.

Clutch- fairly straight foward.
Injector pump- the truck has a case of creeping idle, which I think is due to a shot diaphram at the back of pump, on the B motor it's a case of stripping the pump down as far as I can tell. I'm assuming I can't do this at home. = $$$
Blue smoke- haven't worked out exactly what's causing this atm, i've got a compression tester comming in the mail so i'll start from there.

After all this, I figured i'd be better off just doing an engine swap.

How about a 14BT Toyota motor? They'd bolt up to the existing mounts. :)

And prepared to pay a crap load for it...

Seriously if you need to replace the motor, I would look for a complete BJ40 (or 42 if you can find a cheap enough one) thats rusted to buggery on ebay and runs well. Take the motor and anything else you need or is any good, scrap the rest. Plenty of rusted BJ's for sale at a good price out there. Even look for dyna trucks with B or 3B motors. You may even find just the motor for a good price.

Cheaper option would be the non turbo 14B motor, find a smashed Dyna, then slap a turbo on it. I'm thinking about it, when funds allow, that is.

Hey shorty,

even though I'm not looking at the moment, can you PM me some prices so I know what I'd be up for in the future?

As a guide I paid $600 for a 3b in nsw or northern Vic (not sure which it was a while ago).. and it had good compression results (near 400's on all 4 cylinders), had done about 295000kms, it also had no bolt ons.. freight was $300.. I think I recall this seller having 2 to choose from... I'd have to look back through my pm's to find out who it was.. I just posted up in the wanted section on here...

but it depends on accessories (p/s or a/c), km's and compression results.. this gives you an idea of what people might ask for them.. but every seller is different!

I rang up aussie motor imports and enquired about 3b, 13bt or even a 14b and i was quoted 3500 for a 3b, 4500 for a 13bt and about 5500 for a 14b..
