Dad, my cars making a noise.

Post by BundyRumandCoke »

So I come home from work yesterday, on sick leave, bloody hell, god awful trip- 3 hrs on the bike with the flu and my head pounding like an 18yo in a brothel.

Anyhow, my eldest daughter wakes me up to tell me her 85 SWB 2L rocky is making funny noises. I go for a drive, and sure enough, on acceleration and deceleration, it goes crunch-bang, as traction takes up again.

This morning I take it for a drive, thinking- hoping its something easy like clutch adjustment, or front wheel bearing. I take it to a mate who has a workshop, does Brakes, clutches and CV joints, and we go for a drive. He cant ID the noise, but agrees its driveline, possibly rear diff, a couple of planetary gears crook. But while we are there, he puts it up on a hoist, and checks gearbox and transfer case oils for metal shards. Pull the drain bung on the transfer case, nothing, its run dry. Refills it, and it does some good, but doesnt fix it.

I drive it home, pull the rear diff cover, oil honey clear colour, and no metal shards at all. I check the planetary gears, all is ok. Refit everything on the rear diff.

So, it looks like a bearing has collapsed in the transfer case, and under torque of acceleration or deceleration, the shaft is moving out of alignment, allowing gears to crunch over each other. Oh Joy.

Fortunately, I have my spare rolling chassis, which I am going to cannabilise for the transfer case tomorrow, and put in down at his shop wednesday.

Ahh well, bloody kids.

I come back home and

With my transfer case (Feroza) I'm amazed how damaged they can be and still operate, though after some TLC (my backyward rebuild) it's good as new.

When I had it apart, and manually shifted from 2H>4H the main centre bearings just fell out (no end supports once disassembed) which gave 1" of slop lol.

Daihatsu's stuff is dead easy to work with, even with limited tools, so dont put off pulling down the dodgy one to find the cause (and letting us know) :)
