Best GU for V8 conversion?

Post by Kalex »

What would be the best GU to buy and put a Gen 3 or bigger V8 into it?
What would be the cheapest?
I have seen a few 4.5's auto's with dead engines cheap as well as 2.8's and 3.0's.
Also how much should i budget for a drive in drive our conversion?

Doesn't make much difference between 4.5 or 3.0L, the 2.8 uses a smaller gearbox. Only real advantage of the 4.5 is that it alraedy has a fuel pickup setup for an intank pump, But thats nothing really.

Budget $15-$20000 for drive in drive out swap.

If you're changing the gearbox as well then I'd look at the 2.8 just because it has 4.6 diffs from factory so you can run bigger rubber. If that gearing is too low then there would be heaps of guys on here that would swap ratio's in a heartbeat. ;)

very very expensive drive in drive out for a conversion.....

far cheaper if done yourself or with mates however.....

yeh i think the 4.5 would be the best option as its already petrol and already has the big gearbox and the correct fuel setups and wiring going to the motor......

from experiance, its dearer if you convert the deisel, and the 2.8 has smaller gearbox....

I've was quoted between 12-15k drive in drive out about 4 years ago by Cass Jones to convert my GU coil cab. Can't imagine it being a great deal different now. As always though. Most expensive isn't always best and cheapest doesn't always cost less than the more expensive coversions. Check for hidden costs when you talk to people about it and have a good chat to as many places as you can and don't discount travelling some distance to get the job done properly for the right price.

Yeah. Which is one of the reasons I didn't do it and I'd also just spent a fair bit on my TD42T
