97 Ln106 tailshaft grease

Post by HIGH97LUX »

I think my tailshaft needs greasing because i can hear a rotating squeak whilst driving and if i put in the clutch it stops.

Its coming from the rear of the vehicle and sounds too loud to be coming from the diff..

just wondering if anyone had any ideas?

and also what grease i should use?

thanks in advance. Josh

Uni joint. If it's squeling it's probably shagged. Common as, bout 30 bucks. Also fun to get off if it's been on for a while :D

mate not sure if it would be a uni considering it goes away when you put your foot on the clutch considering your tail shaft is still spinning. Is the noise still there when your not moving. It maybe a dry throw out bearing. if it is a flogged out uni it should have movemnt try lifting your shafts and looking for any movement.

Checking for play probably won't help. If it's a uni and sqeaking it'll mean it's seized on one of its axis. Take your driveshaft off and you'll find you can't move the yoke in one of the directions it's supposed to.

x2. They'll only squeak when the shaft is under load.

You need to answer the above question...

Otherwise the uni would still be making noise regardless of weather you put the clutch in / out...

...with the info... throw out bearing on the clutch is stuffed not the uni
Noises are hard to track when you are driving, they eco and can be misleading when guessing

EDIT:Any lithium based grease is fine, i use (and have done for many years) any bearing grease i can get from work... but i grease them ALOT.

thanks for all your help guys.

i dont think its the throw bearing as the sound is distinctly coming from the rear of the car and its quiet clearly heard as if it was on the outside of the vehicle not muffled by any housings etc..

so the plan is to have a look at the uni's in the tailshaft first and if that doesnt fix it go from there...

once again thanks for all your help.
