Optima Batteries and a winch question
does anyone know roughly what im looking at paying for a red top? and what a yellow top is worth? are the 6V red top batterys the same price as the 12V red top batteries?
are 24V winches cheaper or more expensive than a 12 V of the same kind?
want to rewire my car, and was looking at how much it would cost for batteries.
thanks.

Red tops are fine for winching.
They are not as good for a second battery if you plan on running a fridge or something that will flatten them right down to zero.
The red tops will still handle the odd flattening just wont last as long as a yellow deep cycle bat.

I run a yellow top which I paid around $400 two years ago as second battery for the fridge and other things. It has done OK however the cycle used to be about 3 days (temp say 23c) and this has now shortend to overnight (temp say 30c+). Full recharge is about half an hour. Noy sure if its on its way out and if so was expecting longer life.

i got a red top today. as i dont have a winch yet so not much point in getting all the batteries.
price was $340 for the 12V red top, yellow top 750cca was $380, yellow 1125cca was $450. 6V red top was $275.
thanks for the replies. does anyone know much about the 24V winch prices compared to the 12V winches?
i thought yellow tops liked a constant current draw and red tops were the cranking batteries (which i would class winching in)

I've receintly purchased a Cat Racing battery. Sealed (maintainence free) so it can be inverted for a short amount of time (according to the salesman). It's 780 CCA with a 5 year warranty and cost $136 retail. Best bang you'll ever get for your buck IMO
Purchased from Hastings Deering in Archerfield/Acacia Ridge if anyone is interested.
Oh and has a slightly larger footprint than say a N70 but is lower.

How does your yella top compare to the Optima H/duty(1125cca) yella top? I believe its on par with the reg Optima yella top......Which don't get me wrong is a bloody great battery and is infact what I have - but only because at the time the bigger battery wasn't available

Oh yeah Optima specifically say their red top is not for winching.....Although I know plenty of people that do

Seconding what Wooders has written...
This is from their website... I think winching on a redtop voids their warranty (if that's an issue for you)...

Winching is considered a Deep Cycle Application i believe.

I've been using 27kg of Optima D31M blue top dual post love since october last year anmd have been very happy with it. 1125 CCA with deep cycle
Makes the deceased red top look a bit puny which lasted 3 years of winching abuse..I know better now.
Only mods : had to extend the winch pos+ lead a bit and make longer hold-downs.
Interesting to note the new Optima warranty "deal" :
18 mths replacement warranty then 18ths pro-rata (ie user pays more the older it gets for a new battery). Not very impressive
Last red-top warranty was 3 years inclusive. The US gets 6 years !!
