ive got all the motor apart doing thats no worries but ive got no idea on how to line all the timming back up again. has anyone done one before? if anyone has done this before im willing to pay for some help with the timming i can do everything else.

sorry to tell you this mate but rip the head off it will have bent all your intake and exhaust valves to shit! diesel's run big compression and have small piston to valve clearances, best bet is to take it to a mechanic if you dont know what your doing.

Not sure about the 2.8 but some engines are a non interference design, meaning that the valves will not contact the pistons if the timing belt snapsInSanE wrote:sorry to tell you this mate but rip the head off it will have bent all your intake and exhaust valves to shit! diesel's run big compression and have small piston to valve clearances, best bet is to take it to a mechanic if you dont know what your doing.

yeah mine did this 2 days after getting back from the mechanic who did the timing belt but decided the tensioners were not worth doing, (probably worth doing it myself next time). Its not preety. I needed a replacement head, mine was un-repairable. It also ended up needing a new turbo as it cracked the shaft.
Alot of dollars there, espicially if your getting someone else to do the work.
Good luck buddy i hope your report was better than mine!

afraid its most likely all over for ya sorry mate.
2.8s are interference engines and although it will all spin over doesnt mean all is well. just means everything has bent enough to move.
id be removing the head to be on the safe side and going from there. or getting the timing belt back on and getting a cylinder leakdown test carried out. but chances are most likely gone.

What he said, im not only trying to bring negatives to the thread but having this happen to me first hand id be very suprised if you canme out with any less damage than this. but anyway its been a few days, whats the report??MyGQ wrote:RD28T is Interferance fit
Mate 3 years ago on the way home from Nissan trials has the tensioner let got and it jumped out of time and bent every vavle in the head, when the belt snapped it would have bent all the valves. yes you can still turn it over but that don't mean its ok.
Same thing happeded to me as 'jorgo'. Total top end destruction. Yeah, it still turned over, but all the valves were bent and I couldn't make any compression.
Big coin to fix. I bit the bullet and swapped it out for a TD42. Cost me about the same.
I highly doubt you got out of it unscathed.
Good luck anyway though.

What he said. There is some good information on Patrol4x4.com for 2.8s.bogged wrote:www.patrol4x4.com for all your answers.
Speaking from experience, everything about the 2.8 is expensive to repair so it might be more cost effective for you to do an engine swap.
update i just picked up a complete 2.8td that was running for $200 i now have all the parts i need so this saturday ill be swaping cams first just to see if i can get away with just doing that but if it turns out bad ill swap heads. ill try and get some photo's up
