and what brands are good

Mate you have unlimited options with this.
You can buy a Safari one, well known brand, probably easy to fit(comes with a template)
You could get one of the copies, same thing made by different companies, theres heaps.
Or you could make your own, stainless steel, exhaust pipe, or you could use plastic plumbers pipe.
Personally, I wouldnt use plastic pipe.
Ive got one made out of 3inch stainless steel.
Shop around and see what prices there are.
Theres also second hand snorkels that come up from time to time, when people wreck 4wds.
Keep an eye out on ebay or trading post, or classifieds on other forums ;)

depends on your vehicle, or were you thinking a snorkel for diving, in that case go to your nearest sports shop and have a look.
Chop it drop it and big block it.
