Grafting Gu diff centre into 80 series housing
Moderators: toaddog, TWISTY, V8Patrol, Moderators
Hello,
how much are the Toyota spider gears for the Nissan center?
On the ARB webpage is only a note that you have to buy the hole gearing set.
And how hard is it to change the gear set?
I been at my local ARB shop and they could not help me in any way.
Could not work out a price for the gear and they dont want to change them at all.
Thanks
Chris

This is something that Daniel from Airlocker sent me a while ago. I'm looking to fit a Nissan HP into a LC60 housingPacMan wrote:Hello,

Anyways, our current model GQ front Air Locker model (RD136) was designed to accept our newer technology unified gear sizing which means you can purchase a gear set directly for it that has Toyota 30 spline geometry and swap it straight in.
The Toyota gear sets are ARB # 728H111.

hmmmm.... so us christie brothers hho dont give a crap about their truck only managed to break 1 short side cv in the whole life of the truck!!!!

i love this thread, i am learning so much!
like - diffs made by nissan are indestructible and will never break!
that is UNTIL, you put billet locking hubs on them, and then everything attached to the hubs will break.......... hahahahaha

Like he said only one CV. This thread is just like saying my Mum is better than yours. its already been proven that hilux diffs can be made way stronger then patrol diffs by team dgr.
there is an awesome thread on 4wda with all comparing measurements of cv's,axles and other things between partol and hilux and a hilux cv wont fit inside a gq housing if i remember correctly,as its bigger.
how many times has dgr driven to and from tuff truck and other comps?
i know for a fact that he only had to be trailered home form 1 tuff truck ever.

Re: gu cv's
it's a valid question, if he's engineered his weak point to be the free wheeling hubs, and blows a hub every time out, only blowing "one cv" isn't really a good milestone, whereas if that CV is the only thing blown in his front end, it's a more impressive feat.ludacris wrote:

yep out of the whole life of our truck in all the comps only 1 (one)!! cv and that was the total amount of all drivetrain carnage, no freewheeling hubs no axles, no diffs, no pinions snapping off like some types, no driveshafts no gears breaking.
id say the patrol stuff is pretty good!
but now i have a sierra, and yes im putting toyota lux diffs in it!
but i will throw the original cv's in the bin and just run longfields and be done with it!

You are refering to 2005 when leonard in his 80 series towed it home cause micks patrol with the v6 commo motor couldnt tow it.?????????
If this is correct then if i remember right it wasnt towed cause of being broken either
Does anyone have any contact details for this Wally bloke? I have pm'd him but in guessing he hasn't been on here for ages,
it's just that I have a 60 series that I'm going to dismantle and sell all the parts seperately, and if I néed to I will keep the 60 series rear diff and see what can be done with it!

Nah never broken a CV.
At TuffTruck this year i sheared the stubs off the drive flange.
I had heard previously from timmy redzook this may happen, so its being upgraded with Bobby Longfield components. I had stock 80 CVs, then changed to longfields, now the stocks are my spares.

The 80 series has better brakes, far better steering and panhard geometry and better suspension....toughnut wrote:Is this so toyota guys can point to their diffs and try and tell people that they are still toyota instead of the easier option of just putting the complete diff under the car?

hmmm... I would say its a worthwhile upgrade.
hands and mums dont count!!!
Dave has NEVER Driven too or From Tuff Truck. We towed him in 05, This year they used Greg's patrol. Other years I'm not sure who or how but it's never been DRIVEN to Tuff Truck.zookisteve wrote:how many times has dgr driven to and from tuff truck and other comps?

If I remember correct the last time Dave drove to a comp he front flipped the car at rover and that was the end of the "Drive in Drive out" days.

Re: gu cv's
Well that makes atleast two Tuff Truck style of vehicles that have run big tyres and had very little issues with nissan gear. In the 6 years of running a GU front, I have only ever snapped one stub. That was helped by different diff ratios, and being completely wedged in Devils Marbles. Yes you can spend the money, and make something stronger... Yes brand loyalty I can understand, but throwing away money may not be everyones cup of tea. EG laurie put nissan rear in his hilux before OBC, and hasnt had an issue, but the toyota front let him down early in the event.MQHOON wrote:yep out of the whole life of our truck in all the comps only 1 (one)!! cv and that was the total amount of all drivetrain carnage, no freewheeling hubs no axles, no diffs, no pinions snapping off like some types, no driveshafts no gears breaking.

Mosko, don't be put off by some of the comments on this forum. If it wasn't a proven conversion, no-one would be doing it. Either way, a complete front GU, or grafted centre should stand up to any comp you want to do, but keep in mind, a lot comes down to driving style and horse power.
Regards Brett
Read up on the diff installs from this web site. It will tell you how to set up a diff for comp use. I wouldn't do it for a daily driver. I got my diff guy to set my 4.3 hilux hi-pinion this way (without a solid spacer as the one I got didn't fit). Only done one comp but will see how it lasts.

Sorry I would not be grafting a GU centre in to existing Toyota tubes, it will be from scratch only thing second hand will be the ball ends.Willy Hilux wrote:I just got onto Bubs and he will graft GU center onto toyota axle tubes if ya looking for someone.

Not Tuff Truck specific, but implys it none the less..
"What set team DGR apart from most of the other competitors, is not only their enthusiasm to compete but the fact that the Hilux (competition vehicle) was a daily driven registered work ute throughout 2004 and 2005 that drove to and from events – and only once never made it home after a high speed multiple roll over."
