1hz diesel blowing abit of white smoke

hey guys,

I have a bj40 with a 1hz in it and it blows a little white smoke on start up sometimes, while I drive what could be some of the causes as I am not very familiar with diesels, as its my first.

White smoke on start up is usually a sign that your engine is starting to lose a bit of compression. Once the engine warms up the pistons and rings will expand and begin to seal better. The white smoke should then disappear or maybe change to a light black.

This is pretty normal as a diesel ages. If the engine starts ok when it is cold and doesn't blow great clouds of smoke then it should still be ok for some time to come.

Ok cheers mate, I spoke to a few people they said it could be a head gasket or that it could be running abit lean what do you think.

if your starting cold it could simply be because of lack of glow plugs.

also can be injector pump problem, sometimes nothing more than an air leak in the fuel lines.

White smoke is unburnt diesel. This will be caused by the colder weather. Don't be concerned, it's not going to hurt anything, just glow it a bit more. Running lean is what diesels do, it's why they are so fuel efficient. There isn't even a throttle body on most diesels (your's doesn't have one) as the acceleration is performed by injecting more fuel. Diesel combustion characteristics are are dissimilar to petrol in that petrol has to run a certain air/fuel ratio. But you can OVERdo it in a diesel.
