After Market Leafs Question?
Sorry for the noob question, but i just bought a set of 2" raised leafs I have installed one side but it is almost like there to short? now instead of the shackle sitting at a 45deg angle its now basicaly verticle (90deg) if that makes any sense.
Are they spose to sit like that or have they giving me the wrong springs?

Is it possible you've put front in rear, rear in front? (If they are different lengths..)
Measure your springs from eye to eye around the curve and compare them to the old ones. If the '2" lift' comes from just resetting factory length springs so they have a greater arch, it'll create a poor shackle angle. The new springs need to be longer.
That'd be the first thing to check.

stock length leaves with more arc. yep. the cheap way to do it.Loud_Pedal wrote:Just measured them up and the new ones are definatly shorter bout 1.5inches shorter, and the arch measures the same distance on both.
So what you are saying is there basicaly just stock leaves the have been 'reset'.

There ironman leaves, Talked to bloke were i purchased them and he said that his had a few come back with the same problem he said that its caused from there not being enough weight on them (Alloy Tray) to compress them to the right length, His giving me a full refund under warranty and will remove them and fit my old leaves back in for me free of charge.

I dont think the weight of a alloy tray would make that much difference but i could be wrong...Loud_Pedal wrote:There ironman leaves, Talked to bloke were i purchased them and he said that his had a few come back with the same problem he said that its caused from there not being enough weight on them (Alloy Tray) to compress them to the right length, His giving me a full refund under warranty and will remove them and fit my old leaves back in for me free of charge.

Great out come though with having your money refunded and he is going to remove and fit your old springs for you. It is great to see some honest dealers out there.
Mark.
Its not cool, unless it's got boost :)
Sounds like semi-honest, or semi-informed...MARKx4 wrote: I dont think the weight of a alloy tray would make that much difference but i could be wrong...

If they are std leaves that have been "re-set", then weight would make no difference, surely? I mean, they're the same as the ones you took out, except "pre-bent" more.
Per what narrowscopeofreality and bad_religion_au said, you'd need longer leaves around the arch, for the same eye-to-eye distance to maintain shackle angle (red OR blue!).

it's not standard springs reset, it's just that the lift spring manufacturer makes them the same *length* as a standard spring main leaf. but more arch and/or stiffer spring rate.RO8M wrote:Sounds like semi-honest, or semi-informed...MARKx4 wrote: I dont think the weight of a alloy tray would make that much difference but i could be wrong...

Re: After Market Leafs Question?
I rang a heap of places when I was sorting out the suspension in my 40, and had them measuring the length of their 'off the shelf' lifted springs.
I found that most of the big name retailers springs were the same length as factory.

Re: After Market Leafs Question?
so basically your better off going to a smaller business, that makes their own stuff when you order it. so if you order longer leaves, they make you longer main leaves??
what business would they be??

Re: After Market Leafs Question?
You don't specifically need a smaller business, just a business that manufactures their own springs, ie not just a distributor of 4wd gear. Then yeah, you can specify exactly what length ect you require.
I'm not sure what that would be in Melbourne, but there would probably be heaps of them.

Re: After Market Leafs Question?
cheezy recommended me to see spicer about three or 4 years ago with my 60, so that might be the go wit the 75.
how much longer should you make a spring(how longs a piece of string) i want to use the stock mounts, i want correct shackle angle, i dont really want to carry heavy loads, i am more after comfort and off road ability.
oh and about a 2 inch lift ( and would prefer not to go extended or anti inversion shackles)* reason for edit

Re: After Market Leafs Question?
with more curve in your springs it increases the angle of the spring in front of the axles/diffs. therefore moving them forward ever so slightly.
if you want to do it as accurateley as possable you would get the position of your centre bolt moved back a tad aswell with the new leaves. but not on the front as it will cause clearance issues. its not that big of an issue but if it was me i would move the centre pin in the rear leaves back about 15mm from the front spring eye.
you have i think an 80mm shackle of is it 100? not sure, best to measure it from pin to pin
moving the bottom of the shackle backward half of its length will give you a 45degree angle according to mathamatics. so a 100mm shackle thats 2 inch and you said your springs measured 1.5 inch shorter so if you add (say happy medium) a 1.75inch to the length of your main it should be pretty bloody close.
good luck with it.
