Is it possible to do this and still get the seat all the way back in the cab??

5.6 RECOMMENDED DESIGNS
5.6.1 CAB CHASSIS VEHICLES
Due to space considerations in the cabin of cab chassis vehicles either a flexible joint shall be
used through rear of cab bulkhead or two separate roll cages shall be constructed.
The main rollbar in the cabin shall be within 150mm of the occupants’ heads but shall not
overhang the occupants. If there is insufficient room within the cabin the two diagonal cross braces
may be within the main roll bar to the rear of the cab.


Does this mean that if i have a cross brace on the tray and that brace si within 150mm of my heaad i dont need a brace in the cab at all?

yeah have looked at doing this. would prefer to keep the tray i have but. just curious if anyone has done it will the cage inside and still get the seat all the way back

its tight and if you go a race style of seat there aint much room... depends how tall you are... im 186cm tall and just did a trip up the cape in a mates gq ute with an internal cage... its bearable...

would you rather be squashed in a rollover???

And the above cage looks good... dont know how waterproof it would be though...

if you follow the CCDA guidelines, you are allowed to have just a roll hoop with a taxi bar across at shoulder height. The down side is that you have to have a full braced hoop as part of your tray.

If it's not for comps, why not install the hoops without the cross bracing and just install a horizontal brace a bit above the floor and the taxi bar at shoulder height. If you're still worried about the strength, either make it out really thick wall tube or run two hoops.

Crappy drawing but you get the idea. You should be able to fit the seats in but the taxi rail will have to be bent to follow the profile of the rear wall.

yeah it is for comps. I have thought about the taxi bar style. The only thing is not all the comps over here in WA are CCDA. some are CAMMS.

I already have a CCDA spec "half cage" as part of my tray

does your half cage have cross bracing in the main roll hoop?

If it does, then you don't need it in the internal cage as well.

pages 3 and 4 show the ute cage specs and as long as your vehicle is a dual cab or smaller (which it obviously is) then the cross bracing can be in the tray roll hoop. I'm pretty sure that CCDA and CAMMS have very similar specs. As long as the material is right and anchored properly you shouldn't have any dramas.

Feel free to correct me on the CAMMS aspect as I've not had much to do with it but the design principals of a good roll cage are pretty straight forward.

Here is a tray I made recently incorporating the bracing in the main roll hoop so that the internal cage (to be made shortly) won't need to have it.

Yeah the tray has a cross brace in it

I dunno if i read the drawing wrong but i thought you could split the cage(bit on the tray, bit inside) but i thought you still had to have some sort of bracing inside - wether it is a cross brace or a taxi bar setup.

Maybe someone can claify this?

As far as i am aware you need the cross brace inside for CAMMS - again i am only goign on the information i have been given. - PLEASE prove me wrong - will make build alot easier!!

team efs qld have a neat internal cage in a single cab sorry i dont have any pics he's still running the standard seats and they were all the way back.

to clarify, yes you still need a taxi bar but that's a whole lot easier to fit than a cross brace. It needs to be at shoulder height and you run your harnesses over it. That way when you crash, your harness doesn't crush your shoulders into the seat like it would if it were attached just to the floor and through the seat.

I race a GQ Single Cab in off road racing (Its actually for sale now) and have got some pics of the car at these sites.

FJG Engineering is where the cage kit came from and the other site is our race team site so there will be photos all over the place. Im about 6 foot 1 or thereabouts and with the seats (they are saas race seats) as far back as possible against the wall the driving position as pretty much perfect considering the space on offer. For a shorter driver the seat could be moved forward to suit, but you couldnt really get much taller in. The cage meets CAMS requirements, which means it shouldnt have any problems with CCDA. There is no crossbracing internally, only the laterals which are connected to the main hoop, side intrusion bars and windscreen bar.

If you follow this link and watch Episode 10 a few minutes in is a 5 minute segment on the car, shows a bit of footage and you can see a bit more of the car and cage

so your cage goes throught the rear wall of the cab?

i am trying to work out if the CCDA rule i posted in my first post means i can keep my existing "half cage" on the tray and get away without a cross brace in the cab.

the main hoop is outside the cab and is cross braced. all that is in the cab is the side intrusion bars, the laterals and windscreen bar. The laterals and side intrusion go through the rear wall to connect with the main hoop
There arent side intrusions in this picture, but this is basically it the same as what I have. Just imagine the rear wall is just in front of the main hoop, diagonals, harness bars and rear backstays and its basically what you are looking at.
But I havent studied the CCDA rulebook, this definitely will comply with CAMS, but the kit has been installed into wagons which compete in CCDA comps

These are some pics of the 4 point that goes in the cab. Another 4 point goes out side and that satisfies the CCDA regs.

The seats go all the way back and rest on the back wall without hitting the cage.

The top tube must go in the recess in the back wall.

Has that cage been passed by the ccda? i thought about the way you hae done it but i didnt know if that harness bar needed to be staight or if i ould bend it into the cab.

Is that cage a bolt in? (just looking at the paint work - did you do it before you put the cage back into the car?)

Was the cage from a kit or did you make it form scratch?

The harness bar is straight except for the ends and is welded in, most of the cage was painted befor it was fitted. If you are going to do a harness bar like this one, make sure you leave enough room between the back wall and bar to get the harness past, it's a tight fit.

This particular cage doesn't meet the CCDA requirements as there are some roof bars that would need to be fitted and that would be all.

This cage is fully fabed and not a kit.

i though that harness bar had to be straight to pass CCDA.
